This is how to make your Linux Framemaker Beta forget about being Beta
and work next year:

Alterations to FM556_linux/bin/linuxm.glibc2.i386/maker5X.exe
In khexedit:
002C:04E9 ---> 002C:04ED substitute E8820B0000 with 9090909090
000A:CCEA ---> 000A:CCEE substitute E8513B2100 with E90E000000

Now you need a full product license, so

Alterations to ~/fminit/licenses
use fmaddlicense with the following command:
add 20-0-44-01-5-01234-13F0D9 (username)

and if you want another user:
add 20-0-44-01-5-01248-50D1CE (username)

Brian.

P.S.
khexedit used to be called khexdit, or use any other hexadecimal editor.
This only works on the latest binaries (from fmlinux2.tar.gz)
I posted this to slashdot ages ago but it seems noone read it, and
people keep suggesting ridiculously complex LD_PRELOAD workarounds.

And, you wonder why Adobe thinks there isn't a viable market for a Linux
version of FM?

It's a lot easier to crack the Windows version of Frame or any other
Adobe product. Just do a search on Google for a serial number or a
key generator.

The Linux license scheme is far more secure by comparison.

If they would have sold it, we would have bought
it. (We have Solaris licenses.)

Since they don't think Linux Framemaker has value,
they shouldn't be hurt by people bypassing the
date restriction, right? I say it's open season
on orphanware.

I'm just hoping that this temporary fix doesn't
keep us from developing a long-term solution to
Adobe dependence.

I apologize for not including your approach in the comments of the
Tyrell crack. However, Dr. Tyrell was unaware of your and Anonymous
Coward's work on Slashdot.

We didn't even TRY the disassemble approach. Surely Adobe would
have several checkpoints, maybe even a CRC for the entire binary.
We thought we might even need to hack the kernel. On Solaris
systems, FrameMaker often checks licenses several times
DURING a session. Our conclusion was that any FM beta hack would
probably have to live closer to the OS.
Finding out that what you did worked, all we can say is:
"We've seen better protected $30 programs in the CLOAD days."

Could Adobe WANT it to be cracked?

The other concern was with khexedit. Do you have any idea what
some Red Hat 6.0 users have to go through to install khexedit?
Lotsa RPM upgrades to get all the dependencies. Even RPM itself
will need an upgrade. (Yeah, yeah, they need to learn!) It
didn't help that some folks are still using the Beta1 version.
For crying out loud folks, get beta2 and enjoy 16 bit color if
you want!

Maybe a little C program would be in order to do the byte changes.
Easy to send by email too.

I sure hope that someone gets this all down, including the
installation instructions for the dictionaries/help files etc.
Never know when someone wants to reinstall a beta.

Thanks Brian,

Sirtuxalot and Dr. Eldon Tyrell

I missed the original post. What is this about then needing a full
product license?
