It amazes me how mauch nasty, pervy, nazi stuff there is on the net. And
yet, I get an email this morning from homestead.com saying they've deleted
my site because I was advertising on NGs and some anal retentive has
reported me. It's unbelievable.

You could advertise anything - a newsgroup?

I'm opening up the site elsewhere. But it was amusing last night, after
reading their smug email, to find out how many bizarre porn sites they host.
Mine was just extracts from a humorous book i'm writing (I won't go as far
as to say a 'literary' site!). The bottom line was my history as a court
jester and troll came up and bit me. One of the pompous, anal retentives who
are all over usenet like a rash- and who I love baiting- grassed me up to
homestead for advertising on NGs- what of course is deeply pathetic is the
fact that whoever did it *knew* that this was a violation of their small
print; now that's what I call a sad bastard.

Robbie, are you getting literary on us or is "grassed me up" really
modern UK English for "snitched"?

Kids in school in South London use "grass me up" in ref to someone
telling teachers/parents/police things they'd prefer not to be known --
and "you're a grass" is a powerful verbal weapon still.

From the Wordsworth dictionary of Underworld slang (mostly american): grass:
to inform to the police or a prison warder; prob since ca. 1930: 1936, James
Curtis 'The Gilt Kid' : "Anyhow it was a dirty trick grassing his pals';
1938 'They drive by night'; Jim Phelan, 'JailJourney', 'Letters from the big
house'; extant. Ex the n., sense 1.

The dictionary is great, open any page and you find something amusing e.g
Cheese Screamer which was slang in US jails for someone who feigned
religious zeal in order to curry favour with governors, parole etc. I bought
it for a quid at this big book bookshop opposite Victoria station, it used
to be a Woolworths- know it Tom? Anyway it's the sort of book Orwell would
have been very absorbed by.....

Don't know the bookshop but will probably visit.

Some of the Wordsworth dictionaries are really good *and* cheap, though
on looking at their *Thesaurus of Slang* under "inform", I notice that
they don't give 'grass' as an alternative.

They do, however, give 'narc' [sic] as a synonym for inform 'on one who
uses drugs'. This must be wrong, because 'nark' is in e.g. Morrison's
*Child of the Jago* [East London 1890s] and 'copper's nark' is in Shaw's
*Pygmalion* from 1912. Partridge says it comes from a Romany word
meaning 'nose' which sounds plausible to me.
