Someone is sending a virus to members of newsgroups thru emails.

Last night my mother found out that someone is taking addys from her and
other newsgroups and using them to send emails to other members of the
group with a virus in the form of an attachment.

The virus she got deleted all our dialup numbers and replaced them with
911. When my mother tried to log on to webtv it started to dial 911.
She shut it off but we got a call from the police dept. any way checking
to see if anything was wrong. She checked her sent mail and there were
a lot of emails in there she never sent. People from her group were
getting the virus from emails with her addy on it. One lady in her
group ended up with the sheriff knocking at her door.

Check your sent mail and delete everything you can and then delete it
from your deleted mail. I would do this often. My storage area has
never been so clean.:-))

It took Webtv 45 minutes to clean up the mess and restore our dialups
this morning. By the way they are not open 24 hours anymore. Business
hours start at 6:30 am Pacific time. We had to unplug the box last
night so Webtv couldn't do their updates in the middle of the night and
possibly end up dialing up 911 again.

Be very careful when opening emails. Warn other people in other groups
you might post in.

If you have MSN for both computer and web it can effect you too.

Just a thought. If you have questions don't email me.:-)) I won't
know if it's really you. Ask them here. I don't know how long it's
going to take Webtv to deal with this.

Beware of the Subjects. NEAT and SPAM. Those are the two that have the
attachment. They are even copying the html in the signature boxes to
make the emails look authentic.

If you click on the attachment in the email it erases your dial up
numbers and replaces them with 911. One woman in my mothers group did
not unplug her box the night before last so every time webtv dialed it
up to update it it dialed 911. It dialed 911 four times that night and
she had the police at her door at 4:30 am the next morning.

Here is the group it first happened to if you want to go in and read
what was going on..

ATTACHMENT WARNING!
This has been posted by several individuals who have received an
attachment that causes you to dial 911...
WARNING---PLS READ!!
to make a long story short i have been receiving e-mails with
attachments----a few were from someone i thought i knew and after
clicking on the attachment i realized different ---- the attachment was
a hackers code --a 911 code--- and after clicking on the link i realized
it was calling 911---- yep --the cops showed up thinking it was an
emergency LOL   if you get an e-mail ( even from someone with a
familiar nic ) and there is nothing but an attachment at the bottom --DO
not open it! i am posting this so others will not go thro what i
did---and some of the e-mails were with "nics" from friends ( of course
they didn't send them )---heck the xxx doing this even sent me this
using my nic ----
when i clicked on the attachment my e-mail page went haywire and as soon
as i saw it was dialing 911 i tried logging off and couldn't --was
finally able to --
when i tried to re-connect it was trying to connect me to a 911 # ----
and of course i logged off LOL   it did this several times and i had
to call web----
like i said this is just a warning to let others know this happened to
me and i don't want this happening to you. [/snip]
---------------
Also in another group, others have posted the same, and one individual
said he didn't even have to click onto the attachment and it started
dialing 911..
The best thing to do for now is not to open any attachments, as those
who have rec'd these are sending the info to msntv

My mother hasn't had any new emails sent using her user name in 2 days.
She also had a problem with her "search" and some of the pages saved in
her favorites. Those are straightened out today. Hopefully the worst
is over. I hope they traced the person down.

[ From ABC News ]

WebTV Virus Dials 911

http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/TechTV/techtv_911virus020723.html

--WebTV, a fine Microsoft product, has a new virus that once downloaded,
will disconnect your internet connection, reboots and dials 911.

What happens when 911 gets a phone call and no one answers the
dispatcher? You get a friendly (or not so friendly) visit from your
local law enforcement.

Thanks Microsoft!

My mother had a few more of those emails the other day. None since
then. Hopefully they are getting this under control.
