GetSystemMetrics( SM_MOUSEPRESENT ) works to detect the mouse in NT or 95,
but in 98 it always returns true.

The same is true for GetSystemMetrics( SM_CMOUSEBUTTONS ). It works in NT or
95, but in 98 always returns 2.

How can I get the _REAL_ results in Win98. I.E. How do I see if a mouse is
present in win98?

Forgive my curiosity, but why on Earth would anyone even ATTEMPT to run
Windows without a mouse (or some other type of "pointing device")?

I really couldn't tell you, Chris, but there have been times before where my
mouse had malfunctioned and I was force to navigate by keyboard (not a pleasant
experience, to say the least). Also, some people with disabilities might prefer
using other devices to control the computer. I do agree with you though; it is
rather an unusual sight to see someone using Windows without a mouse.

I would have thought that most of these "other devices" would appear to the
system as though they were a mouse, just like the "glide pads" on notebook
computers do. I suppose one could conceivably operate a program like a word
processor using only the keyboard, but surely for most Windows programs a
mouse (or a device which looks to the operating system as though it were a
mouse) is a necessity!

I wouldn't consider it a necessity (assuming that the programmer followed the
Windows interface guidelines, of course... if they didn't, then everything is
off) for most programs, but I do agree with your statement; using Windows
without such a device would be a huge waste of time and productivity.

I don't know. You can do some things a lot faster with a keyboard than you
can with a mouse and vice versa. I think the best was is a combination
between the 2.
