1. Your background tiles left to right. You may have your screen res
set low, but some of us prefer our 21 inch monitors to actually
utilize higher settings, like 1024 x 768. Its okay if it repeats top
to bottom, just make your image wider so it doesn't tile left to
right.
2. Get rid of the stupid Javascript notice about how you know how to
program cross-browser, but only do IE4. This is egotistical jargon
that noone cares about, and makes the rest of us developers cringe.
3. Lose the copyright frame at the bottom of the new window. Again,
more egomania. Dont assume everyone is a thief, don't assume your
viewers are stupid, and don't assume your viewers care. Capture their
interest, intrigue them with interesting navigation, graphics and
layout, and get your message across - but don't let that message
be:"Im the greatest web developer alive, but don't steal my ideas."
4. Get rid of the hypermart ad popup. It pops up on every page, and
enfuriates modem users. If it is a requirement for having them host
your site, only put it on the first page, and let us browse the others
unfettered.
5. Interesting use of Layers, but your layout is tooo jumbled. Get
a grip on orientation and make your viewers squint less.
6. Give your navigation a second look. I went to the Info Page, then
the Services page, but when I got there, my choices were either to hit
the info navbutton again or right click and select back. Include
links to make your site as carefree as possible to navigate. Dont do
this because your assuming your viewing audience is stupid or slow,
but to make it as fast and painless as possible. On every website on
the internet, viewers must learn to navigate each site differently,
but hopefully quickly and easily. The ones that are too difficult to
figure out, or the sites which contain mazes of poorly linked pages
get passed by. Most people are too impatient to fuddle with bad
design. I finally found your recursive link back to the info page,
but it wasn't anything close to being obvious.
Personnally, I never design right side navigation bars, because
western civilizations read left to right, and we tend to comprehend
quicker left to right.
Overall, I loved the graphic elements and the concepts. Also the YMCA
page is great, and so is the Pier Magazine site. You just stumbled
across some of my web design and layout pet peaves.
Keep up the good work and be sure to tip your waitress.
