Free Outgoing SMTP Mail Server !

I am a VSNL customer from India. As an ISP, VSNL works good but their mail
servers are never reliable. There is no guarantee that an e-mail posted via
their SMTP server "smtp.vsnl.net" would reach its destination (sometimes
will not even bounce but "lost totally") !
These days usually no mail server support open relay, so as my ISP is VSNL,
I
am bound to use their SMTP server although I am totally disappointed with
it.
Is there any reliable outgoing mail server (SMTP) which will allow me to
send e-mail (though my IP address is of VSNL) ?

If there were, *EVERY* mass-email SPAMMER would be using it. As a result,
it would be sending worldwide SPAM as fast as it's available bandwidth would
allow and service through it would undoubtedly be a LOT more unreliable that
what you currently have, not to mention the fact that MOST (if not all)
other email systems would eventually BLOCK all your email because it was
sent from a "Known SPAM Relay" server.

Thanks a lot for your advice, I did not know that I could setup an SMTP
server on my own system. Please explain it in detail..... What is the
software required? where can I download it ....etc.... Is this possible in
windows 98 - as it is my o/s.
Also can I use the SMTP server to receive mail as well?

Actually you don't need to go to all this trouble. Just sign up for an
account at http://fastmail.fm which provides access to an SMTP server. You
will need to use a mail client that understands SMTP AUTH to use FastMail's
SMTP server--on Windows Outlook Express works very well.

No, you need an IMAP or POP server. FastMail provides both IMAP and POP
servers--http://fastmail.fm contains detailed information comparing these
two systems and explains how to set up Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, or
Pine to access your email.
