relevant to this board at all, and looking at the email address you can see this
person is out for his/her own gain

Many companies do, except that those companies has just about
the worst advertising (or non-existing advertising) department.
Take a look at, for example, Commodore and their Amiga platform back
in the mid-late 80's. Or even Sun MicroSystem. The problem is more
in people's mind than anything else. People think of MS whenever
the word 'computer' comes out.

I hate that no companies can out do Microsoft. Why cant some company come
out with something better than windows? Microsoft is just monopolizing so
much it makes me sick. Everyone hates that windows costs over $100, but
everyone still buys it. Are all of the software companies stupid to not see
this. I mean come on give microsoft some compition and take some money away
from Bill Gates. Your just making Bill Gates more of a BILLIONAIRE! We'll

They have to pretend. They never were real people...

Now then, let's not turn this into an OS/computer flamewar. There's
enough of those already.

The many others are also arseholes, and I refuse to support companies
that
pollute newsgroups with spam. rec.arts.anime.misc is the wrong place to
post ads for computers or debate whether or not MS is evil. If you wish
to have a real discussion about MS, go to a computer newsgroup.

Aieeee! What do you mean, stuck? I live at work so that I can deal with a
nice, clean and simple OS like UNIX instead of the crappy Winblows machine I
have at home. (And if you wonder why I don't have UNIX at home, the reasons
are twofold: my roommates need their MS Office and I need my games. I'm only
human, you know.)

UNIX is a beautiful thing.

So is having enough drive space that you can put both a Windows and a
Linux partition in, and boot with either one depending on what you
want to do. (Or else installing something like Monkey Linux which
will reportedly live happily in a DOS or VFAT partition.)

MS has the advantage of being the incumbent, the 800-lb gorilla of the
computer market. Their software has filled the niche of desktop
computer OS veritably to overflowing, to the point where if someone
_wants_ to use some other system, he is up against the twin
disadvantage of not having the apps available to do all the things he
needs, and incompatibility between the apps that are available and the
apps the rest of the world uses. Even though MS's OSes leave a few
things to be desired, everybody still uses them because everybody
_else_ still uses them.

Maybe that'll change sooner or later...we can only hope.

Wow...a talking spammer! I didn't know your kind had evolved that far.

At any rate, you are incorrect. You are not a "real person", you are a
spammer.

Think about this with your pea-sized brain for a second: If everyone here
were to post 3 advertisements _a day_ to our favorite groups, what do you
think would be left? (besides ads, that is.)

You posted an obviously off-topic AD to a group that DOES NOT LIKE SUCH
THINGS. Complaints have been sent. Expect to lose your posting priveleges
from Deja News AND your piss-poor website at Angelfire (who doesn't like
commercial sites on their service.)

I only wish I knew what ISP made the mistake of giving you an account in
the first place...but I'm not worried... I'm sure you'll be back, and we'll
still be here - ready to send gentle complaints to your providers again.

Learn the difference between putting an ad in your .sig, and posting nothing
but ads. He made a post - an on topic post. He's also made lots of other
on-topic posts, and is generally considered a knowledgeable member of this
group.

Compared to you, who's first, second, third, and every other post has been
nothing but an ad for your website.

UNIX is swell for running enterprise servers, huge databases (I am a systems
guy for a large public library system), etc. The main reason I am a bit
"down" on the fanatical Redhat stormtroopers (no, I am not insinuating
everyone who uses Linux is a stormtrooper about it) is that they always tell
me how terrible W95/8 is without giving solis examples of how Redhat is
better for the AVERAGE USER. Perhaps you and I, as compu-otakus, have the
motivation, knowledge, and dedication to reap the benefits of a unix
environment. The problem is, Joe Sixpack who wants to plug in his Gateway,
browse the web, and terminate aliens in Quake is not gonna be able to INSTALL
let alone run, Unix properly.

In a sense, the whole Linux/Windows debate can be compared to various types
of anime. Whereas Linux is an unsubbed and undubbed copy of Ah! My Goddess!
(which a hardcore fan would still find enjoyment in), Windows is more like
Sailor Moon, or Robotech, easy to understand, widely distributed and
supported, but kinda short on the truly deep content some of us crave.
See...I amnaged to tie this whole debate into a (marginally) on topic post!

Your shit is spam that doesn't belong here. He's just rying to get rid of it. a
lot of people advertise their url in their sig., true, but unlike you, they
actually have something relevant to say in the rest of their post.

Oh, you had to ask, didn't you? <G>

I culled this from rec.arts.anime a long, long time ago:

Lum Signs With IBM To Push OS/2 Warp In Japan

TOKYO, March 13 -- Lum, the daughter of the alien Invader, has signed a five
million yen agreement to endorse IBM's OS/2 Warp operating system in a series
of television ads to air this summer...

* * *

(SCENE: The Moroboshi's house. Dinnertime.
(Present are ATARU and his PARENTS.
(All dialogue is in Japanese with SUBTITLES.)

ATARU: "I was thinking of buying a computer."
MR. MOROBOSHI: "You think about improving your grades first."
ATARU: "But Microsoft's got this new Chicago thing..."
MR. MOROBOSHI: "You see what kind of a son we have?! He's already lining up to
buy it and it isn't even in the store!"
MRS. MOROBOSHI: "I should never have had him..."

(Ataru keels over in disgust. LUM enters, toting the OS/2 box. JARITEN floats
in with her.)

LUM: "Darling! I've found the perfect software for all of us!"
ATARU: "OS/2 Warp?"
JARITEN: "Easy enough to install that even a dummy like you can do it."
LUM: "Look! It even comes with Internet access. Oh, I've always wanted to surf
the 'net on Earth! Just think -- now we can do it *together*!"

(She throws her arms around him. ZZZZZZAP!
(Super titles: "IBM -- Solutions for a small galaxy.")

* * *

IF OPERATING SYSTEMS WERE URUSEI YATSURA CHARACTERS...

DOS: Mr. Moroboshi. Earnest, hard-working, and dull as dirt. Also outdated.

Windows 3.x: Lum. Lovely and diverse, but you never know when you're going to
get toasted.

Windows NT: Benten. Powerful, but what a bitch on wheels.

OS/2: Mendo. Backed with more money than God, and still worthless.

SCO UNIX: Cherry. Ugly as hell and twice as cantankerous.

Mac OS: Sakura. Very pretty, and ultra-incompetent.

Well...frum a Tenchi Muyo standpoint...

Windows 98: Ryoko...very capable but with a mean streak, you never know when
it's going to get mad and/or do something silly. Space piracy is nothing
compared to Microsoft.

MacOS: Mihoshi...more capable than it seems, despite years of marketing
bumbling and stumbling. Unfortunately for mac fans, like Mihoshi, very few
people take it seriously.

Unix: TV Series Ayeka...regal and aloof, Unix and it's users scoff at Windows
(Ryoko) and the dreaded "wintel"(space pirate) syndicate despite the other
being a formidable foe worthy of some respect. On the other side of the coin,
Ayeka has a great deal of power in her own right, and the backing of Jurai...

I can feel with you... I had to use this sick Linux/Unix stuff at my college as
well, luckily only for a short time - but that was torture enough already ^_^;;
I can't see why people would want to torture themselves at home with this crap -
must be masochists or something... ^_^;;

madcomputer is worse than a troll...he is (or was?) a spamming troll.

(a troll, which you just fed...ah well...picking on trolls is hard to
resist, ne?)

Most unusual. Most spammers just post their ads and go away. Trolls
don't post for commercial gain, they just want attention. This is
truely a first (and worst!) attempt I've seen at crossbreeding these
two species. At any rate, for his spamming, he'll lose his webpage and
post priveleges (if not all internet access.) Most places don't like
trolls either, so it's unlikely we'll ever see this loser again.

You know you have to wonder why people spam. It's because it works right? Then
you have to hate the pople who make it work. If everybody ignored these
messages via email, snail mail for porn, erase your credit, you've already won
such and such or an add for a supermarket across state then eventually it would
stop.

Ignoring the problem won't make it go away. If anything, ignoring spam
just tells the morons that what they're doing is "OK". Since it's "OK"
they'll just do it more. And more. And more. And more. Worse, other
folks will see it and say "Well, if *he* can do, it must be OK for *me*
to do it!" (Which, btw, is exactly the excuse that was uttered here.)

No. The way to deal with spam is to get the spammers off of the internet.
This will send them a clear message that what they are doing is NOT "OK"
Send (polite!) complaints to the people providing them with internet and
web service.

Or you can grab a pitchfork and run them out of town like we just
did ;). Make it clear that you will not under any circumstances
support companies that spam. They're trying to make money, and
if you convince them that they will hurt their business by
spamming they'll stop.

(problem with that is that most spammers don't have a business - other
than spamming.)

Frankly, I'd like to see spammer's heads on pikes outside the various
ISPs that nuked them for spamming. Sort of a return to the idea of
putting the heads of criminals on pikes outside of a city to warn any
would-be thieves their shenanigans wouldn't be tolerated ;)

I got a reply to a spam-complaint I sent saying the spammer had been
charged $1000 or something (probably written into the contract).
That seems like a good idea to me. Pikes aren't bad, though.

A few ISPs are charging "spam cleanup fees". If more ISPs did this, there
would be a lot less spam in the world.

I think the harshest I've heard is $1 for each spam message sent out, and
$150/hr for cleanup (includes the time to reply to the complaints).

Considering that spammers claim to send out millions of messages a day,
you can see that this will basically bankrupt the spammer.
