Hi Folks,

using Snowie now for round about a month I have a few (maybe useful) hints
and a few questions.

1. On my notebook I changed the harddisk from FAT-16 to FAT-32 (8 clusters),
on my pc from FAT-32 (32 clusters) to FAT-32 (8 clusters). In both cases I
had to re-register my Snowie copy, because the reg-code #2 had changed.

2. When you want to do a rollout of a lot of given positions, it's easier to
load them via the windows-explorer. Start Snowie and open the
windows-explorer. Then go to the directory, where you put your position
files. Mark (for example) 10 files, rightclick on them and choose "open" in
he context menue.

3. When you play on fibs using the Bbgt4.0 you are able to save matches as
Jellyfish *.mat files. If you to open them with Jellyfish, it works without
problems. If you try to import them with Snowie, you get the error message "
no match found".
Soloution: Open the *.mat file with any editor. In the first line you'll
find for example "5 Point Match". Change it to " 5 point match" , and Snowie
will import this match.

4. For importing Gamesgrid matches, you usually should have the version 2.09
(release 558) to save the matches as *.sgg files. If you still have an older
version there is another way to import them into Snowie. Save the match as
usual (*.cbg). Then go to the menue "edit" and "copy match". Open any editor
and choose "insert". Save the file, open Snowie and import the match.

Now a few questions:

1. Has anybody found a way to save Gamesgrid money sessions?

2. Has anybody found a way to analyse several matches in a row (like a
batch)?

3. How can I see the volatility in a given position (as in JF)?

4. Is there a way to put the bearoff database on the harddisk and use it? I
don't have an internal cdrom drive on my notebook.

To answer your questions:

1. Money session: no, Snowie does not have the notion of a money session in
the current version. Version 2 will surely have this feature...
2. Batch analysis of several match: not possible. We will include it in
version 2.0.
3. Volatility: there is a volatility information in the panel Dice. Besides
this, one should understand that Snowie is based on the Early/Late cost
ratio for making her cube decision, and that there is a link (not obvious
but ...) with the volatility.
4. Database on hard drive: there is several databases in Snowie:
- full and exact database up to point 6 and up to 8 checkers: always on
Hard drive
- binomial database up to 15 checkers: if CD ROM inserted : up to point
11, else up to point 8 from HD.

Hope this help...

here are a couple of suggestions for version 2 of snowie

THE IMPORT PROCESS:
the whole process of getting a match imported in from Gamesgrid if
frustrating.
1) save the match in Gamesgrid format (which ask you to type in a file name)
2) re-open the match in GamesGrid and resave it in Snowie-GamesGrid import
format (which makes you retype the name of the file you are saving)
3) import the match into snowie
4) do snowie eval etc.
5) save the file in snowie format (which makes you retype the name of the
file you are saving yet again)

Now why am i whining about this process?

-You now have 3 types of files on your machine
-you have had to retype the name of the file each time you have saved it in
a different format
-if you have several matches imported into snowie and have not saved them,
you end up with matches with the name "untitled1, untitled2" etc. which can
be confusing when you have imported several matches which contain the same
opponants.

THE INTERFACE:
Although I find the interface quite easy to use, I have a couple of
suggestions
1) more buttons...i would like to see some customizable buttons with help
speed up the process
such as:
- a couple of predefined analysis buttons. I analysis 99% of my matches
using the same settings, but snowie really wants fo confirm the settings
every time you analyze a match...
- there is no button for the full match analysis which I think was an
oversite since, I would guess that imported matches are probably what snowie
is dealing wih most often

2) it would be great to have a cube analysis window AND a move analysis
window open at the same time...I am flipping between the two many times and
think having both visible at onewould be helpfull

and finally,

3) if it was possible to flip through the move/games/errors etc by using the
arrow keys....it would speed the whole process up dramatically.

I think Snowie 1.0 is a great product and look forward to seeing more from
Oasya in the future

Anyone else have some "enhancements" they would like to see in future
versions?

Dear Julian,

Thanks for all your suggestions. We'll take them into account when preparing
the next version of Snowie. Of course, I am with you about your suggestions
that anybody with nice ideas should express them, either on rgb, or directly
by email at in...@oasya.com.

here is another suggestion for Snowie improvement:

- after Snowie analyzed a match for me, and I want
to browse over it quickly, it is crucial for me to
examine 1.)errors/blunders and 2.) decisive moves/
Cube-actions. The first item is no problem, Snowie
finds errors for me. But the latter _is_, you have
to write this positions down while playing, if you
want to find them manually later, or you will come
into the danger to forget them. Even if I got them
right while playing, I would be happy to look over
them again, to have them memorized and rolled out.
It would be a great help to have the option to set
"flags" by pressing a button while playing against
SW and to be able to customize the browsing button
to go to the next "flag".

At the top of the board in browse mode there are two sets of arrows
that say something like moves or errors. Right-clicking on either one
allows you to select all sorts of filters like blunders, all errors,
cube decisions, cube errors, and one-side errors or both side errors.
Clicking the arrows quickly sequences to the positions you need.

The explorer panel is also valuable for flagging positions with
various color overlays and fonts. My suggestion to Oasya would be to
allow separate color schemes for the overlays representing each
player, rather than the same scheme for both.

Well, english isn't my native language, so I guess I
didn't make my point clear here. You can customize a
browsing button to all sorts of cube/checker-errors/
blunders, but I would like to be abled to set a flag
to an interesting position while playing and to have
a browsing button-filter "Flag" to observe it later.
