[copy of an email exchange wherein I was sent a cutesy little religious
message]

Unfortunately, someone forwarded me this homely little email (see below)
that most recently originated from (the sender) and it's not the first one
I've seen from the same source.

How pathetic. If there is a god, do you honestly believe he went to the
trouble of creating you solely so you could forsake your own humanity and
morph yourselves in to some mindless, sycophantic sub-form of himself? Is
this the highest purpose you can see for your life and that of your
children? Just scurrying around spouting silly little praises to an
evidently very-insecure little god?

If I was a weakling and needed to tell myself that I couldn't get through a
day without some big magic guy in the sky assisting with every step, as you
evidently do, I could certainly imagine a god far greater and more majestic
than yours.

My god wouldn't have created people, in large part, because he wanted
someone to glorify him. Can you imagine having children for no purpose
other than to glorify yourself? My god wouldn't be a racist, with a chosen
people. My god wouldn't be a sexist, confining women to a subordinate role.

My god wouldn't be a homicidal maniac, slaughtering thousands of innocents
in the Sinai Desert - in fact committing genocide (if we are to believe the
Old Testament). My god wouldn't be an ego-maniac, insisting that I have no
other allegiances on par with his.

My god wouldn't have drowned the entire Earthly population of humans (save
Noah and family) simply because they were behaving like humans. After all,
god created human behavior, didn't he? Can you imagine even a lowly human
parent drowning their child in the swimming pool for misbehaving? Can you
imagine worshipping them for doing so?

My god would not command that I not eat of the Tree of Knowledge, but rather
insist that I eat of it daily. What loving parent, other than a
fundamentalist Christian, would intentionally keep their child ignorant?
Why is knowledge still the biggest fear of fundamentalists? Because
fundamentalism can only exist in an environment of ignorance and dogma.

My god would really answer prayer. Your god has a very spotty record there.
Ask the thousands of people who's bodies were spread across the landscape on
September 11. Suppose some of them were praying for a different result?

Most of all, my god wouldn't hate the word "humanist," nor hate the fact
that I am one. After all, he did create me in his image. He did design the
mind with which I make every decision. He wouldn't tell me that the best I
can do is as "filthy rags."

My god would be the kind of parent most of us aspire to be: He would raise
his children to be strong and independent, innovators and risk-takers. Free
thinkers and questioners. Not mindless followers of dogma. He would
certainly appreciate being loved, but he would strongly discourage
"worship." My god wouldn't require that his children spend most of their
lives praising and glorifying him. Why would he? Why would he need or want
that?

It is not too late for you. If you can't see the disease in what you do and
what you teach your children, you should consider having yourself
reprogrammed. There are professionals that can help you. Once you have the
courage to open your eyes, you will look back in horror at the shallow,
silly life you were wasting.

You owe it to your children to teach them they may have better things to do
with their life on Earth than hating their own humanity and shutting down
their own minds to suck-up to some alleged deity in the sky. It's all
really just mental illness and you've got it bad.

Have the courage to think about it. Then do something about it. Good luck.
