Ok, I went a wee bit mad and bought a Creative Labs Voodoo 2, and
immediately booted up the 3dFX version of Grand theft auto... One question I
have is "Is that it?"... it looks, plays and feels idential to the standard
version of GTA (in 24bit colour)??? Is there something I am doing wrong here
or have DMA optimised the shit out of their standard code so its equally as
fast on both platforms???

Things don't have to be ostensibly 3D to benefit from 3d card
acceleration. The very fact that there *is* a 3dfx version of GTA
implies that it's using the acceleration somehow. (Besides which
there are clearly 3D graphics - just not first person perspective
ones.)

I suspect Evil Ninja's "problem" is that his machine was already
powerful enough to run GTA at a full frame rate, so using a 3dFX
card doesn't add much. I know on a lot of games there are a lot of
added special effects (mist, lighting, whatever) using a 3D card - I
suspect GTA just uses 3dFX to accelerate the frame rate on slower
computers.

If you have a FAST "cpu" then its about the same speed. However, the
3Dfx version allows up to 800x600 with filtering... can't do that in
software. :-)

(yet)

Even on a P200, its very quick in 400x300... on a P2-300? I have no
idea... quite fast I'd guess..

Actually it makes a huge difference on some machines... I have a pretty fast
machine and it still looks and moves faster on the 3dfx version...

Are you by chance the David Paterson who used to work six feet from Dave
Lees who worked six feet from Mike Dailly and whom I used to work a
dozen feet from all of you?

Hey guys! Where's my complimentary copy of GTA! I must have worked on
the dialogue for all of a fortnight! The police tape on the cover of
Edge all those months ago now adorns the front of my PC.
