In Robertie's book of 501 problems, he writes that you should split
your back men at the earliest opportunity when your opponent is
awkwardly stacked just outside his inner board (6,7,8 points I guess)
but doesn't have a strong inner board (just the 6 point, I'd guess).

What is the reason for this urgency? Is this a defensive or offensive
move?

Thanks,
KLG

The reason for the urgency is because if your opp has stacks of checkers on
those points, he is ready to fall into place with a prime. You
really-really-really-can't-stress-it-enough want an advanced anchor in that
position. the best way to get one is to split your back checkers.

Hope this helps.

Right!

Fight for that 4 or 5-point right away if you can. If you get it, you
are usually in the game for a long time and have vastly reduced your
chance of getting gammoned.

What you may get is a dull holding game, but that is better then
seeing that 5 or 6 prime form in front of your rear checkers that will
hold and crush your game like a boa.

Frank, you're getting downright poetic on me! I like the simile. :)
