news reports are coming in that 3 people are stuck in car on Hwy 12 in
Pea Island area & Coast Guard can't get to them by boat or heli...

...hotel has fallen into the ocean in Kill Devil Hills...

......a lot of media folks are stuck on 2nd/3rd floor of Ramada in KDH
because 2nd floor balcony is collapsing (same hotel as above?)

...check out slide show on foxnews.com...has a picture of major
overwash on Hwy 12 between Frisco and Hatteras.

What else are you guys hearing?

The overwash between Frisco and Hatteras makes sense since normal high tide
threatens the road already. That used to be my favorite launch site.... I
guess now it'll become a point break.

Heard the 3 guys were rescued from the roofs of their car only after
the 3 emergency workers who came to rescue them got stuck too. All 6
are safe from what I hear. Coast Guard was apparently not very happy
they didn't heed the warnings.

Tidal surge took out the Durant Motel & Apt. and the General Mitchell
Hotel in Hatteras Village. I believe Rocco's pizza is at General
Mitchell's Hotel, right? I 1sdt ate at Rocco's long ago when he was
up in Avon, and his son was like a 5 year old running the cash
register. http://www.pilotonline.com has some good reports.

The way I understand it the Coast Guard will never charge for these
rescues because they believe that if people think or knew they'd be
charged thousands of dollars, they wait to call until they
are really, really in trouble. These guys fit that bill, but sometimes
people call when they just are about to be in trouble, and call because
they know that they won't be charged for the rescue. In a strange way, it
actually makes the CG's job easier and less dangerous. Just what I heard
on one of those rescue shows once.

Hopefully they were scared enough to learn a lesson.
