I have not seen it mentioned so why not....
I was at the bookstore today and I briefly looked at the current
issue of _Sci-Fi_Universe_. I did not see anything that made me
jump out and buy it, so I did not. But one thing I notice was
a brief section on Daniel Keys Moran. Moran is a written science
fiction author. (I rather liked his "On Sequoia Time" in the September,
1996, issue of _Asimov's_.) He is also the person responsible for
the "Hard Time" which was one of last season's DS9 which seems to
be fairly popular with the fans. In any event Moran said to the effect
that B5 was the kind of series that Gene Roddenberry would have made
if he could write. While maybe one might quibble at his bluntness,
this is unquestionably a fairly clear endorsement by an SF writer
of note.
Is anyone keeping track of how many written SF writers have endorsed B5?

But actually, the reason I post this is to say: I understand why you are
using this usage, but it certainly reads oddly to me, and seems
redundantly redundant.

*grin* Classy entrance, DKM. Didn't know you lurked.
(So, JMS, when're you gonna get the guy to write a script or two for
you? You really should take some time off this year, y'know...)

A bit of a surprise, I was not expecting a reply from Moran himself.
Next question: How many written SF writters are lurking here?
[. . . .]
A lot of folk use DejaNews or another search engine to kibo Usenet, ya
know. :-)
Er, surely you're not expecting a massive and comprehensive answer? They
*are* lurking, after all...

I did that for a while, to see what the Trek people had to say about
me a while back. This ng I actually read; in fact, this newsgroup, the
Lakers ng, and my own mailing list are about all I _do_ read online
with any regularity. I used to read the B5 topic on GEnie, back when I
was on that service, for the same reason; an interesting subject,
bright people, high signal-to-noise ratio.
Since he's specifically referencing comments from prose SF writers
as opposed to script "SF writers," while his choice of terminology
might be contestable, his concept is certainly valid.
You're just looking for a nit to pick.

No, he doesn't..... he's got this buddy named "Ralf," who takes dictation...

Nine points to the guy with the brain.
And JMS, while you're at it, please consider that once the elections
are over, if no one had the good sense to elect DKM to office (even
if he is a brackafratzing Democrat) he might have the time to do a
couple of *reasonable* B-5 novels for Dell, whenever he wants a break
from the Continuing Time yarns..... after all, his projected life
span (barring the development of reliable DNA-repair nanobots) is
less than a century now, so there's no more chance of him finishing
all the Continuing Time books than there was of Spenser finishing
the "FAERIE QUEENE," so DKM's entitled to an *occasional* weekend
off to work on something different.......
(And DKM, if you're still reading this thread, it's been *FAR* too long
since "THE LAST DANCER," so try to shake some time loose to finish
the next one before the turn of the century, okay? I know you come
from a long-lived family, but this is ridiculous; keep it up for another
couple of decades, and you'll be vying with Ellison for the "Real Soon
Now Grandmaster Award." *grin* )
>>high signal-to-noise ratio.
One man's signal is another man's noise.
"Noise" can just mean the fact that every day there are 300 posts to go through.

I'm certainly glad Mr. Moran enjoys B5. It is quite heartening to see
most of my favorite authors like one of my favorite shows for the same
reason that I enjoy their books! Quality, Realism (within the dramatic
milieu) Kick-A** characterization and a stunning sense that every action
has consequence (not all of which are nice)!
I sorely missed his DS9 ep. Heck, I was totally iggerant of its
existance (We don't get DS9 in these neck of the woods. We barely get
B5!) I second the nomination for Mr. Moran to do a B5 script! In his
books we also see that same attention to detail and prophetic
fore-shadowing (arggh!) jms is known for! The two of them should either
hit it off wonderfully or tear each other apart! <g>

You might check rec.arts.sf.written and the new rec.arts.sf.composition,
though I'd call a lot of posts in all these newsgroups "noise."
Particularly any tv newsgroup (no offense intended here, but I'm afraid
it's true).
