SAILING INTERNET CONNECTION
***************************
Magenta foundation is at this moment doing a project which
involves two wireless Internet connections from a boat that
sails through Holland. For this we use two Hewlett Packard
P100's (full-blown Pentium PC's, not laptops), 2 PTT-Telecom GSM
cellular Phones (Darwin), two PCMCIA cellular modem cards and
two modulettes for hook-up to the ports. Data traffic is at 9600
bps. The connections are very stable. We're running Netscape,
FTP, Eudora mail and IRC without a problem. The project is
sponsored by Hewlett- Packard, PTT-Telecom Het mobiele Netwerk
and Planet Internet. Technical realisation: Ronald Eissens.
Support: Otto Selis (HP) and Erik v.d. Steen (PTT Telecom)

Yes Brieuc-Yves:
It is of interest. This news group is in sore need of wireless
applications.
You might look at using Imarsat C terminals for "store & foreward" for
applications like Email & MicroSoft Mail. Have it check about every 4
hours while sailing to upload & download mail. Ideal for sailing
vessels with needs to have Internet connectivity.
Now, if we could just get the cruise ship companies interested in
providing Internet & Teleconferencing access to its passengers over
Wireless ISDN BRI 2B+D via Satellite.
