'Cept the Bows, that is! In what turned out to be the perfect match
to cap a well-fought season, the University of Hawaii ended regular MPSF
season play with another sweep of 4th ranked Stanford, 15-3, 15-11, 15-8,
at a sold out Special Events Arena. Bows are the 6th team in history to
finish league play UNDEFEATED. Congratulations to these dudes!
Overall, the Cardinal had fewer errors than the previous night, with
Fuerbringer chipping in a team high 12 kills that came at key sideout
points for Stanford. But not point-wise for Stanford. Passing was stll a
problem, but mainly because of Bows' serving. Hawaii pulled out all the
stops with at least 8 jump serve aces (2 from Aaron Wilton - yes, u heard
right! and Ring j-serves, too!), and incredible blocking! Katz had the
match-high record with more than 20 kills. Tonight was the typical David
and Goliath game from Thursday. Few notes:
Game 1: It was deja vous as the Bows overpowered Stanford to start
off with a sideout, Katz kills and excellent blocking to bring it to 4-1.
First time out. On the next points, Stanford hits wide and errors to
bring the score to 7-1. Another ace and kill brings it to 9-1. (Yeah,
this was definitely deja vous!) Katz was held to 2 kills while the rest
of the team (Wilton, Milo, Ring, and Leoni) winning the first game for the
Bows. Bows had 3 blocks in a row on key points as well. Stanford chokes
again as Milo and Ring put away kills to make it 15-3. On the Cardinal
side, Whitehurst, Poolman, Fuerbringer, and Garcia contributed on key
conversions.
Game 2: Stanford leads for the first time in the WHOLE series for
the first time a 2-1. Poolman goes out of the game w/ a twisted right
ankle after hitting long, 3-2, with Bender coming in. Katz dinks a kill
and aces to bring it to 4-2. After an ace scored by Stanford, Wilton
j-serves twice but Stanford hits long, 6-3. Stanford hits on a sideout
(one of FEW), 6-4. After a couple of Stanford errors and Milo's ace, it's
9-4. Chong aces one for Stanford, and Ring is stuffed, 9-6. Hawaii keeps
leading Stanford to 12-7 with key Katz kills and an ace. Stanford has an
unusual run to make it 14-11, wih Bows trying to put the second game away.
Timeout Bows. After an exciting effort by Stanford to keep alive, they
lose it on a net call. 15-11.
Game 3: More of an intriguing game in the whole series, exciting
sideouts and rallies. At 2-2, Katz j-serves 2 aces to 4-2, timeout
Cardinal. Bows pulls to 6-3 on Cardinal errors. On a Hoefer stuff and
Stanford error, it's 8-3. What impresses me is Moore (6-9) of the
Cadinal. This guys is a GREAT hitter! Stanford has a run to 8-6.
Stanford's stuffed, and the LONGEST rally (real scrappy!) puts it at 9-6.
Another 2 kills from Stanford mishandled balls put it at 11-6. Bad shank
by Hawaii puts it at 11-7. Katz hits, Fuerbringer hits long, 13-7.
Hawaii finishes the match -- and a perfect season -- with a Pichel ace and
stuffing Stanford at 15-8.
Number 1 from the start, Bows are 25-1 overall and 19-0 in MPSF play.
Whew! What a night! This was *definitely* worth my money!
C y'all at MPSF playoffs! (Anyone got a sleeping bag so I can camp
out for tickets???)

C ya
