In the only MPSF match in LA this weekend, Northridge defeated San
Diego State in three games. Jon Price used several different bench
players in addition to his starting complement of Bond, Axel Heitman
Drago, Hughes, Strickland, Nash, and Smith. Bergschneider and Gil saw
extensive playing time.

The Aztecs enjoyed leads, but, shanked themselves out of contention in
every game. Neither side's middle attack was spectacular, although
Lars Winter had a relatively good time for San Diego State. Not much
else to report on this match, per se.

Northridge has one of the worst warmup tapes I have ever heard. All
rap, all the time, at jet-engine levels. Worse, even, than the AVP.
And they have an organist who is interesting to say the least. He
played snippets of the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth ("Ode to
Joy" section) when Drago got a ball down.

Station surfing on the way home, I heard Billy Joel. And started to
lyricize. The following resulted. Were Joel dead, he'd be spinning
in his grave.

Ode to the Not Volleyball League
to the tune of
"It's Still Rock 'n Roll to Me"

Oooh what's the matter with the game I'm watchin'
Do ya think that it's outta touch?
Twelve tall fellas on a big rectangle
Do ya think that it's just too much?
Well let me tell ya 'bout this NVL sonny
Full of rule changes and some big tv money
Everybody's talking 'bout the new league sorry but
It ain't volleyball to me

Oooh what's the matter with the plays they're runnin'
Do ya think that that guy's too strong?
Kills everywhere and that good sideout rhythm
Do ya think that it lasts too long?
Gimme a setter and a good pair of passers
Three blockers on the net tryin' to take care of matters
It's an x-play, great save, trans play, putaway
Now that's volleyball to me

Listen to what Beal says to the public
As he tries to cover his neck
Ruining tradition for the short-term attention
Of the dregs of Generation X

Ooh what's the matter with the fans we're gettin'
Do ya think that they're just too old?
Got your heart set on that younger demographic
Leave the wise ones in the cold
What you gonna do when the league folds Dougie?
Chapter Eleven with USAV money
Blitz block, rally clock, scoring shock, baloney crock!
It ain't volleyball to me

Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new league, sorry but
It ain't volleyball to me
