ponie vs pone

Just saw a message about Perl On New Internal Engine, or PONIE...
Could it possibly be shortened to PONE? Or maybe "Pine Cone"?

I try not to make too much a deal about the masculine/feminine or
adult/childlike connotations of a name, but bloody hell. "My Little
Ponie" by itself is enough to make nobody take it seriously. In
particular, WTH is this
doing on CPAN?

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry... Maybe I should get a humor
transplant, I admit it. But then again, maybe the name might just not
be serious enough.
