I hit two royals on my last trip to Vegas earlier this month.
Hit one at the Rio on a 25c deuces wild machine for $1000 but I can't
remember how many cards I held. (I do remember screaming "YESSS!!!!!)
However the next day I hit a royal again, this time on a $1
progressive machine at the Stardust for $5,238 :-)))) and I
remember vividly that I originally drew QH and KH and three crap
cards, held the two high cards and then drew the A, J, and 10 of hearts.

The only Royal I've ever hit was dealt to me. The weird part was that
it was on the 2nd hand of VP I ever played in a casino!
While taking a break from playing Blackjack at Mystic Lake in MN, I
decided to run the 10 quarters I had in my pocket through a VP machine.
I had played a couple of times on some cheesy pc software. But, I was
totally clueless about correct play, payoff schedules, etc. The only
clue I had was someone once told me to always play maximum coins.
That turned out to be good advice.
That was 3 years ago. Since then I have played frequently at home or
whenever I can get out to Vegas plus an occasional trip back to
Mystic Lake. My best estimate is that I've played at least 200,000
hands (using a good VP tutor and learning correct play) and have not
had a single Royal since.
I'll be in Vegas 8/10 - 8/13 looking for #2....

How long did you play for before winning both those jackpots? What size
bankroll were you playing with. How did you go about picking a machine to
play.

First one was on a dollar machine; dealt to me. Unfortunately, I was just
running out of money, and I only had two dollars in...couldn't even play it
off until the floor man opened the machine.
Numbers two and three were on the same night...drew two cards to each.
The most recent one was on a progressive quarter machine at the Peppermill
in Reno. Also drew two cards.

Within the past few weeks, both my wife and I have hit royals on JB
machines. In both cases, two cards were drawn. My wife ALMOST drew one
to the pat four-card flush, but decided to go for it. ;-)

At the Rio, if I remember correctly, I was about half a roll
of quarters into a 25c Deuces Wild machine when it gave me
the Royal ($1000).
At the Stardust, I was less than $20 into that particular machine
when it gave me the progressive Royal ($5,238).
I noted this coincidence later too.. that both machines seemed to
already have their pumps primed and I just had to sit down and
tickle them a little bit to have them shoot their wads, so to speak ;)
Then again, as I get up and leave a greedy machine I always wonder
if someone sat down at it after I left it and hit a Royal on it.
But that kind of thinking can drive ya crazy.
I have never had a royal flush on a redraw. I have had them dealt, have
drawn 1, 2, 3, and 4 cards. The most common (for me) is drawing either 2
or 3. That has been my experience over the last 6-7 years.

Last year at Jackpot Junction in Morton, MN, I hit THREE separate royal
flushes during a four day vacation.
1st one was on a nickel progressive for $306.74...next day, hit an 8/5 Jacks
or better quarter machine for $1,000...then the next day, on the same nickel
machine mentioned above, hit for $360.75.
On one I held four to a royal, the second was three to a royal, and the
third one was holding an ace and ten of clubs..
The only royal suit I have yet to hit was diamonds...
(Plus, I won about $400 from a dollar vp)

Just for fun, I ran the theoretical numbers for Royals(and hands derived
from) on my VP generator.
Assuming perfect strategy play (not theoretical perfect) for a 9/6 J+
non-preogressive machine:
One cycle (2,598,960 hands) would generate: Draw # #Royals
0..................4
1.................19.915
2.................26.231
3.................12.249
4.................2.191
5.................4
Therefore, Royals should generate in the approximate ratio of:
Draw#
Relative Ratio
0..................1
1..................4
2..................5
3..................3
4.................(.5)
5.................1
If you get enough answers (helluva lot), it will be interesting to compare
the theoretical vs the empirical.
I don't get a chance to play that much...and have never gotten a royal in
actual play.
A friend plays frequently, and to the best of his memory reports that's
he's had one natural, 1 3-card royal and 1-2card royal hit.

Joyce...We may be saying the same thing...but it's a little confusing.
Just to clarrify:
These are not odds of drawing a Royal. They are the relative ratio of
expected Royals generated as a function of the number of cards drawn
__given that the player is playing the best (maximized return) perfect
strategy for this machine___.
The odds of drawing a Royal are obviously best when drawing to a 4 card
Royal (1:47).The odds are not better of drawing 2 cards to complete a
Royal than with any other combination...it's just that there are so many
more 3 card Royals to draw to (given maximized return strategy) that the
majority of Royals will derive from a 3 card Royal hand (or Draw 2 hand).
The odds of drawing a Royal to a crapola (draw 5) hand, are better than
drawing a comeout Royal,(because you've taken non-making cards out of the
deck)...but the number of opportunities of drawing to a crapola are far
less(given you are playing maximized return straegy). (Matter of fact, my
figure does not look right to me)
It's kind of interesting that Elliot Shapiro, in rather extensive
experience, has not encountered a draw5 Royal. From recent reading on
rec.gambling, I know that he is an accomplished and very mathmatically
solid player.I wonder if he is playing a maximized return straegy...or may
be playing a more volitile maximized Royal strategy. (His experince is
making me wonder if I have miscalculated at some point. I think I'll go
back and look...I did it kind of quickly.)
Your thread is good. It's interesting to test theory and experience...even
if the sample is limited.

These should be correct now.
Obviously, the preponderance of Royals received are generated from holding
a 4crdRoyal (not many occurances but high probability when held) and
3crdRoyals
(many,many more occurances of holding but lower probability of drawing).
Even though the probability of drawing a Royal from a crapola is better
than the probability of drawing an initial 5crdRoyal, the occurances of a
crapola draw are significantly less.
