It was 11 o'clock when I woke up. So bachelorish! I wanted to go out,
so had a bath, and some breakfast as lunch and put on a CD of malayalm
songs before I stepped out. Sometimes you need a proper mood to enjoy,
or should I say re-enjoy songs. To discover the beauty in lines you
never noticed till now, or even pieces of the music, you seem to have
skipped all the while. Once in a while god opens your heart... It was
not for the first time that I was hearing the song
"saranamayappa swamy saranamayyappa
Sabari girinatha swami saranamayappa"
Did you ever notice the tabala trying hard to smoothen the almost
aggressive udukku in the background with filler beats?
Of course there are not many songs in the calibre of
"ente kadinjool pranaya kathayile penkodi" and
"pokuveyil ponnuruki puzhayil veenu"
It sounds like MB Sreenivasan's music - is it? Certainly if there was
ever a golden period in malayalam movie song music, this song is
certainly one from that era. The only one in "modern times" may be
"neela kurinjikal pookunnu veedhiyil
Ninne pratheekshichu ninnu"
(And how modern is this?)

I had gone for yesudas's ganamela at poojapura last onam. For once, I
could see CITU goondas mellowing to the level of new married women in
the sweaty stadium, at the music of the gaanagandarvan. Well this
Vijay Yesudas was big bore, I should say. Coming back to my CD, it
seems I never listened carefully enough to the 'nadaka ganangal' ,
"veyil ninnu vilayadum nizhalilla nilamanu
Nivarum neramilla thennale"
Had me back in my childhood when we used to walk along the varambu to
my grandmother's house hearing the gurgling stream on one side and
occassionally tasting the nellu from the vayal from the other side. It
seems that was another life. There used to be a silence when the bus
moved off after we got down, leaving us alone at the bus stop on the
road with rice fields on both sides. We spent many onams there, much
time on the swings hung from the stout pulimaram. Making garlands from
the tapioca leaves and stems, sleeping on the floor of the old house
hugging to my mother, looking at the scary plavu outside the window
with manevolently gleaming leaves in the moonlight, and the
occassional minnaminungu. We were assured that the rumbling from the
attic was the friendly marapetti, and was nothing to worry about.
Grandmother, who used to walk around the house in her white roukka
with a golden button on top and a knot at the bottom, is long dead,
the house is no more, so is the vayal, what is left is
"thumbapoo peyyana poonilave
Ente nenjil niryana then kinave"
Or may be
"Chandra kalabham charthi urangum theeram
Indra dhanussin pookal kozhiyum theeram
Ee manohara theerathu thrumo
Ini oru janmam koodi enikku ini oru janmam koodi"
In reality, another janmam wont help, since the theeram is longer
there. It is just chemicals holding an image in my brain which will
die with me.

Listening to
"oru mukham maathram kannil
Oru swaram maathram kaathil
Uranguvan kazhinjilallo"
Swept me to my pre-degree years and to this moon faced girl whom I
used to see on my way to college. She was as beautiful as she was
angry, it looked to be. She used to wear mostly long white skirts with
colourful blouses and her eyes used to look deep blue to me (ok, I
hear you laugh). Do such people exist any more? It is with angry
sadness that I hear "dharalama… keralavu ninachukko" in the madhavan
song from "Run", what do you people know?

Or those wonderful christian songs, that now sound so intense,
uplifting and even non-commercial?
"nithya visudhayam kanya mariyame
Nin naamam vaazhthepedatte"
And
"aakasangalil irukkum nangade
Answarane pithave"
So sincere, so delightful

Some of them, I don't know what I like about them, I don't even
understand them properly
"Isal then kanam kondu va thennale nee" (gazal)
and
"kadana nidanam na ham jaane janaki jane rama"
Also
"seetha kalyana vaibhogame.."(paithrukam)

Is it the movie scenes? (esp the last one). Maniyanpilla Raju must
thank his stars..

And so many, many more…
It was four o'clock when I finally managed to leave the house

cool man,
You know how and where to touch the nostalgic string. The list of
songs you provided... its superb...
lemme add to the list....
"sumangali nee ormikkumo"... the default song for all the broken
hearts. and the song which have a really good mix of fantasy and
rhythm "madhuchandrikayude "
What about the golden melody "Swapnangalokkeyum pankuvekkam" and also
the great old (my favourite) "alliyampal kadavil" and the great old
Muslim song from Yesudas "Aayiram kaadam akaleyaanenkilum" which takes
you for a ride through the melody and the "Entaeswapnathyin
thamarapoykayil" which pricks you right on the love line. There is
this song "Neelagiriyude Sakhikale" which always gives me a feeling of
freshness and the song like "Aayiram kannumay" which you definitely
cannot neglect (have you checked the starting tune of this song? I
copied that and its the startup melody of my PC... simply great).
"aadiva kaatte"is another one , which should be mentioned along with
the "poo maaname" from Nirakkuttu. What about the sweet song "Ragendu
kiranangal" from avalude raavukal? One of the college day hits which I
remember is "Ormathan vasantha nandanathoppil" from Daisy... man I
love that song. I dont mind keep on listening to semi classical hits
like "Swaminatha " from Chitram, "Nadaroopini" from his highness
Abdullah, "Rama kadha" from bharatam etc...
On the new category, there are few new songs like these..."mauliyil
mayilpeeli" (nandanam) and the xtian devotional "Israyelin". You cant
measure these on the previous song's scales, but still these songs
need an appreciation. Also another song from the album ninakkayi -
"Ennakarupin". The song from the movie Mazha, "Aaradyam parayum" looks
great to me, evethough you all may oppose.

Looks like I tried to put a lot of songs of my preference. But this
only a minor list. The full list consists of 1000s of songs. Anyway
the message here just forced me to compose this message.
Have a great time

Thanks for responding.

Some of those have got old due to over-exposure, can I say? Like
"alliyambal". You need to be somehow "reborn" to enjoy them again, I
guess. "raghendu kiranangal" is a great one - dont know from where KT
Ummar dreamt up that breath-taking violin sequence. (I reminded of
another astounding violin piece in Shiv-Hari's "neela aasman so gaya")

"Aayiram kannumayi" is a good song, but some say it is just another
"pallipattu" - the music is allegedy like that. Dont know if you
agree.

Some others rush in
"kannante kavilil nin sindoora thilakathin
varnarenukkal njanngal kandaollo radhe"
and
"pon veyil manikatcha azhinju veenu
swarna peethrambaram ulanju.."
(Noticed that percussion changing from tabala to thavil sometimes in
the song? )

One song I missed was "yerusalemile swargaputhra yesu nada"
"aayiram kaadam" is a rare gem - we dont have many of such songs
