Has anyone downloaded and tried the newest version of Netscape (1.2b4)

If you have, can you tell me the difference between 1.2b3 and 1.2b4?

I use Spry's Mosaic for a browser and have very little problems, but I am anxious
to take advantage of Netscape but I hear a lot of bad things about 1.2b3 anyway,
and not too much about the old 1.1

Any help greatly appreciated.

It's faster.

On my system (Win 3.1, 486 dx2-50, 16Meg RAM, Sprint VLB Win Accelerator Video)
there is much faster display of both graphics and text.

The progress bar and and remaining download time added bak into the Saving
Location mini-app.

Pull down Location bar for history list.

Table borders now are shaded to match the background of the page instead of the
systems default background color.

If you're able to functionally install NS 1.4 beta, then go to the
Help menu and click on RELEASE NOTES.
That will take you to a site that explains the differences between the
current version and the previous version.

I get the impression 1.2b4 has corrected some of the bugs in scaling
images (<img src="blah.gif" width=85% height=10> now works, even when
it's under a table with an <img> in it).

The scaling of images in tables still doesn't work every time (i.e.
you have to reload in order to get the images scaled to the right
size).

Tables (and particilarly images in tables) in 1.2b1 to 1.2b3 had a few
problems: 1.2b would either insert a 1-pixel line a few pixels from
the right edge of the image, or chop off a few pixels aff the right
side of the picture. Fixed in b4.

It seems there's a few problems new for this beta in the "never check"
option: from time to time, Netscape will try to check on a page I
_know_ is in my cache.

Stuff like that. Small fry. Nothing radical I think. It crashes less
often. That's not saying it doesn't crash any more, because it _does_.
Argh. Try going back and forward a bit in the history, or cutting and
pasting text from pages to the url box...

Probably a bug fix release, beta 3 had quite a few (including the
elusive "reboot your machine" bug.

I just grabbed it.
Mostly seems to be similar - 1.2b3 was reasonably stable, though still
complete crasher with hitting back after looking a particular (large)
jpegs (mysterious problem).
Anyway, most noticeable difference is that Current Location box is now a
drop box (you'd expect it to have the recent history in) but it doesn't
appear to get anything in it except about:
Also the font of the current netsite is smaller (neater) and not Bold.
hugh
I'll try my guaranteed crasher page now, after sending this.....

I don't know about you, but I get the current site plus the last five sites that
I've been to when I click on the down-arrow in the combo box. If all you get is
about:, that's probably the only page you've been to? Just a theory -- give it
another try, maybe.

So far, I've seen a big big improvement in stability. GPFs have been
cut into at least one tenth their previous frequency.

Good.

What's the difference, you ask? Well, 2b4 works. Crashes, what's
crashes? I've been using Netscape since .9something, and I
crashed regularly. With 2b4 and the dialup stuff from 1.1n PE, I
have crashed not once. Let me say that again - not once. And I
surf 3-4 hours per night. I'm happy as a pig in.... yes, right.

Oh, 'bout forgot - win31, 16bit, from out in the woods of central
GA.

I think it's just the last few sites you've typed in rather than the full
history.

I ran it for the first time today, and within an hour, it crashed
three times. Also 16 bit, WFWG. Maybe because I was down to about
25% resources (16 Mb here) -- which might have been because I started
my session with 2b3, which told me when I tried to send mail that my
"From" was incorrect. (It was/is correct.)

I also noticed that when I was d/l off an FTP site, Netscape couldn't
tell the total size of the files I was d/ling, so I didn't get the
bytes count bar. I thought that was strange.

Got a 486 DX2 66 8 meg of ram running WFWG and GPFs galore with 12b3 and 12b2
but 12b4 has been running since the first day available and NOT ONE GPF.....
Only complaint is the new smaller text in the URL window and when u click on
it it initially highlights all of the text...
I liked the larger print (too damn small on a 14" monitor for me anyway) but
on the whole love Netscape..

I have been running 1.2b4 for almost a week now. It is a little more
stable tan 1.2b2 and a LOT more stable than 1.2b3. Strangeley enough,
neither 1.2b2 or 1.2b4 give me GPFs (although 1.3b3 did like crazy).
What ha[ppens is Netscape locks up and I have to exit Netscape (no
problem so far). When I try to restart Netscape, however, windows
tells me that it is still running and wont let me start a new session.
When using taskman, however, no Netscape appears!

A complete mystery to me. Any explaination?

(BTW WFW 3.11 on a 386SX-16 w/ 8 Meg, using Winsock)
