Just what is this IRC anyway? If it's any relation to the
I-R-S, I want nothing to do with it. Those blood-suckers
latched onto me years ago and still won't let go!

Oh, it's FAR more insidious than the IRS. Once IRC latches on to you,
it's almost impossible to get it to let go.

IRC stands for "Inter-Relay Chat." Most commercial online services have
forms of this - CompuServe calls them Conferences, AOL and Prodigy call
them Chat Rooms. You need to know a few more commands to participate in
IRC, but it's the same basic principle.

Bill, Chuck and I had a very nice real-time chat yesterday at about
2:30pm Eastern, and I'm certainly up to trying it again. It was a lot of
fun racing SirWill to see who could do the appropriate Firesign response
the quickest! Plus, he promised to walk me through the MUSH when he
comes up here for the FAlaFal bundling/mailing party (I'll post more
about that in this newsgroup anon, and on and on and on...), so there's a
bonus right there!

So, those of you out there with IRC capabilities, would you like to set
up a weekly #firesign channel? When's good for you all?

Weekday evenings are best for me, but I'll do my best to make
it at any other time. Looking forward to cyber-chatting in
real time!

Some weeknight is OK by me as well. Imagine that, a firesign chat! I
wonder if CI$ has IRC so Phil could join. I'm sure Peter can get to IRC
from netcom.

I'd be up for it, but mid-afternoon (like last Friday) is definitely out. Any
evening is fine (except Wednesday) after 7 pm.

No, CompuServe does not have IRC capabilities, but they do have the best
internal Conferencing setup I've yet seen on the Commercial online
services. Which is why Wednesday night is out for me, too - that's when
I go on Conference in CompuServe's Comics/Animation Forum.

I'd rather it weren't earlier, because we would like to include our West
Coast friends, many of whom are just getting out of work when it's 8pm
here on the East Coast.

I will shortly be driving a late model SLIP (non-Freudian) account on the
InfoBahn and would love to join the Fireheads for an evening of Firesign
Chat. I'm abnormally gowned and bagged 1-11 EST Sat-Wed, but am available
any other time. While one man's desires may not amount to a hill of beans
in this world, I thought I'd let you know. Here's lurking for you, kids.

Yeah, you're right John, I'd hate it. "Not on a school night!" as my

Not an external link, at any rate - their Conferencing and CB
capabilities are all internal (i.e., they do real-time chats all the
time, but only within the CompuServe structure).

It's generally OK with me, except for this Thursday (March 30th), since
I'll be appearing in a local production of Hellman's "The Little Foxes"
(as Oscar Hubbard, one of Miz Lil's nastier creations) that night. After
that it's cool, though.
Does anybody out there know anything about writing IRC 'bot programs?
The #babylon5 channel, for example, is kept up and running permanently by
a 'bot called Babcom. I think a #firesign 'bot (Tirebiter, maybe? >:-)>
) might be useful for the same purpose.

Hey, like, WayCool! I'll try to drop in after I get back from my
performance of "Little Foxes" - probably around 11:30 - midnight Eastern.
If nobody is on-line, I'll just retire to my scale model of the Taj

Elayne,

I am usually on for an hour or two most nights starting about 12:15
Eastern. Last night I cranked up #firesign just for the heck of it to
see what would happen. A couple of people stumbled in. I usually
monitor three of four IRC channels at once, so another one doesn't add
to the confusion that much.
