#1 Hawai`i d. #11 Stanford 3-1
30-28, 30-27, 27-30, 30-28

Let the mayhem begin in the MPSF. Stanford came in hungry for an upset. They
were close [perhaps a little too close], but no cigar. The match could have
gone either way with both teams having major ups and downs. Theocharidis led
all attackers with 26K, but Ching's 20 kills were more timely and his serving at
the end of G2 was unbelievable. Toppel started off slow in G1, but sizzled in
the remaining games to finish with 25 kills. Overall, UH outhit SU .360 to
.314, out-dug them 39-32 and out-aced them 8-5. Blocks were virtually even with
12 for SU and 11.5 for UH.

Starters for Stanford: Bocage (MB), Ahlfeldt (MB), Curtis (Opp), Vogel (Lib),
Strickland (OH), Toppel (OH) and Hansen (S).

Starters for Hawai`i: Tuyay (S), Muise (Lib), Zimet (OH), Theocharidis (OH),
Ching (OH), Thomas (MB) and Stanhiser (MB).

G1: A very close game with the lead switching back and forth. At 9-9, UH took
the lead on a side out and natural point served by Tony Ching to make it 11-9,
only to lose the lead on Curtis' serve to fall behind 11-13. Ching later evened
the score on serve at 19-19. A minute later, Bender came in to serve a pair,
including an ace, for Stanhiser at 20-20 to make it 22-20. Toppel tied the
score on serve to make it 26-26. At 28-28, Stanford's Bocage made a fatal
serving error to give UH game point. Zimet served and Stanford hit the return
into the double block of Thomas and Tuyay. UH was led by Ching 1B/6K and Thomas
2B/3K. SU was led by Strickland 1B/5K and Bocage 2B/4K. UH outhit SU .406 to
.316, out-blocked them 4 to 2, out-dug them 12 to 6 and out-aced them 2 to 1.

G2: Another close one until the end when a rash of errors by Stanford and potent
serving by Ching ended the game. Stanford broke an 18-18 tie with a side out
and 2 natural points served by Strickland to lead 21-18. Another natural point
served by Ahlfeldt widened the gap to 23-19. Leading 24-22, SU widened the gap
to 27-22 on Curtis' serve which included an ace. UH sided out and Ching served
the final 7 natural points despite 2 SU time outs and a substitution. Ching
served an ace to end G2. UH was led by Theocharidis 2B/8K Stanhiser 1B/3K.
Ching had only one kill, but his serving at the end of the game made the
difference. SU was led by Toppel 6K.

G3: UH broke a 15-15 tie with a side out and 3 natural points served by Thomas
including an ace to make it 19-15. Moments later, the gap widened to 22-17, but
SU crept back. Trailing 21-25, SU took the lead for good on a side out and 7
natural points served by Strickland, including an ace, to make it 29-25. UH
sided out and scored a natural point on Thomas' serve before a service error
ended G3. SU was led by Toppel 1B/9K and Ahlfeldt 2B/3K. UH was led by Ching
1B/7K and Theocharidis and Azenha with 4K each. SU outhit UH .486 to .351,
out-blocked them 4-1 and out-dug them 11-10.

G4: Another bruiser which went down to the wire. The lead changed constantly in
this game. Finally, at 28-28, UH sided out and Thomas served match point.
Fittingly, Ching put down match point.

Kill Leaders:
Hawai`i - Theocharidis 26, Ching 20, Stanhiser 10
Stanford - Toppel 25, Bocage 11

Double Doubles
Hawai`i - Tony Ching 20 Kills, 12 Digs
