2002 Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic Championship Match

#4 Hawai訴 d. #7 UCLA 3-1
30-28, 30-25, 28-30, 30-13

Lily Kahumoku is back with a vengeance. She racked up an impressive 26 kills
and hit .469 to go along with 11 digs. Both teams had their ups and downs, but
the Wahine came back to blitz the Bruins in G4 after letting G3 slip away. UCLA
out-blocked UH 12-6, but were consistently out-dug and they made too many
hitting errors. Willoughby struggled at times and needed to vary her shots more
to avoid the big Bruin block. Kahumoku drove the Bruin blockers crazy with her
shots. Boogard made another solid showing at the net and held her own in the
back row as well. Gustin (2B/9K) turned in a gutsy performance as her left foot
was still hurting.

Starters for UCLA: Cira Wright, Brynn Murphy, Krystal McFarland, Lauren
Fendrick, Heather Cullen, Angela Eckmier and Chrissie Zartman (Lib).

Starters for UH: Margaret Vakasausau (S), Kim Willoughby (OH), Nohea Tano (OH),
Lily Kahumoku (OH), Maja Gustin (MB), Lauren Duggins (MB) and Melissa Villaroman
(Lib).

G1: UH jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Bruins tied the score at 7-7. UH ran
away again and built up a 6-point lead that held until 22-16. At 24-20, the
Bruins sided out and ran off 6 natural points to take the lead 27-24. However,
with UH trailing 25-28, the Wahine sided out and scored the last 5 points of the
game on Duggins' serve. Kahumoku put down game point. UH outhit UCLA .196 to
.163, out-dug them 24-19 and out-aced them 2-1, but was out-blocked 6-1. UH was
led by Gustin 1B/5K, Kahumoku 5K plus Willoughby and Duggins with 4K each. UCLA
was led by Murphy 2B/5K and Fendrick 1B/4K.

G2: More of the same. UH starts off with 5 straight points on Willoughhby's
serve. Again, UCLA ties at 10-10 and keeps up with UH until 14-14. UCLA failed
to get natural points and fell behind to 19-27 before Wright served an ace to
close the gap to 21-27. A moment later, Jorgensborg served for 2 more natural
points to narrow the gap to 24-28, but that was as close as UCLA got. The teams
traded side outs and UH won on a kill by Willoughby. UH was led by Willoughby
1B/7K. UCLA was led by Wright 5K, Eckmier 2B/3K and Ringel 3K.

G3: A very close game. The margin between the two teams was never more than 3
points. UCLA's block made the difference in this game. Willoughby struggled
again and hit game point wide. UCLA was led by Ringel 5K and Wright 2B/2K. UH
was led by Kahumoku 7K and Willoughby 1B/4K.

G4: Hell hath no fury like Na Wahine scorned. McFarland served an ace to give
UCLA the first point, but that was the only lead UCLA would have in this
lopsided game. After three straight natural points on Duggins' serve, UCLA
burned its first time out at 7-2. UCLA closed the gap to 7-5 before UH went on
an incredible 14-0 scoring run on Boogard's serve which included an ace. With a
21-5 lead, the end was inevitable. UCLA managed to score a natural point at
27-10 on Fendrick's serve to close to 27-11. The teams traded side outs until a
kill by Willoughby ended the match. UH was led by Kahumoku 2B/7K and Willoughby
4K. UCLA was led by Eckmier 3K.
