Hi,

I cannot read the second boot floppy. Upon inserting the floppy, the system
returns this message:

Error determining if this is the correct diskette
Warning: FDC unexpected state

any ideas?

My system:
Pentium 4; 1,7 GHz; 256 MB RAM; Adaptec 29160N SCSI Controller

You're going to want to create a new
second floppy on a new diskette. It
sounds like you have a bad one.

Good Luck,
Matt

The original message hasn't shown up here so I'll reply to Matts
message.

There is case where you can not find the second floppy - ever -
even if the first floppy read just fine.

That is where you have used the swap-floppy in the BIOS setup.

BIOS finds the first floppy. But remember that Unix systems use
the BIOS only for boot-up, and when it goes to read the second
disk it is going to the disk that is PHYSICALLY at the first floppy
position, while the BIOS has placed the second physical floppy at
the first logical position.

So there is the possiblity that this may be the problem too.
This seems not to be widely known.

Is it in ANY FAQ - or does this knowledge only come when you get
your diploma from TSHK - The School of Hard Knocks. In case you
haven't guessed I've been there when given HW that I did not set
up.

Hi Matt,

I need a HBA disk for my SCSI controller and I have the same problems.
The disks are OK.

Did you see Bill's followup?

He mentioned that your problem has the symptoms of having it's
floppy order switched in the bios. A: becomes B:, and B:
becomes A:.

Do you have two floppy drives?

If you have only one floppy drive, does the install program
read both install diskettes now but fails to read the
HBA diskette?

I had trouble understanding what you meant in your post above.
Please try to describe what happening in a few ways so that
we can do our best to translate what you mean. We appreciate
your trying to write in English.

Best,
Matthew

It doesn't matter if there are two floppy drives or not. The above
can happen with one floppy drive.

The machine was built by a vendor and delivered to the customer. I
had to install the OS and came on the above scenario. There was one
floppy and the vendor has used the swap floppy because they probably
put the floppy on the wrong connector. They found it and used the
swap floppy in the BIOS to correct for it. When I had the problem I
made them correct as it was their fault.

This is just one possibility. Remote possibility but still a
possiblity. It will never affect anything in the MS world because
it always uses BIOS settings.

And for some reaon I still dont see the original post, or the one
you replied to. News is sometimes quirky that way.

Hi,

I found a article under www.sco.com/ta.

Look at the Support Level Supplement (SLS) PTF7081A.

I have disabled the CPU level 1 cache and level 2 cache in the BIOS.

When the system is very slow. I was able to installed Unixware

without any problems.

Ahhh. I get it now.

I snipped it a bit. I'm getting tired all the repeated
text, but I can see how it's needed. Try google groups.
He posted the solution, which I'll copy here, fyi:

For the busy folks, he means this:

to which I would suggest turning those back on now
that it works. I'm sort of confused why this 7.0.0
issue cropped up again in 7.1.1, but c'est la vie.

Best,
Matthew
