Birth story for Matthew Edward, born Aug 24th at 11:54 am.
10 pounds 6 oz
22 inches long
Homebirth in the water, midwives 2 minutes late!!!!!!!!

I drank 3 castor oil cocktails, 1 ea hour starting at 4pm. * recipe follows
lol*
I had just posted to Lynn Paden- "where are you?" at 10:30 pm when I decided
to call my midwife. I was having contrax 10 minutes apart that weren't
really hurting (like all last week) but I was feeling very spacey- I
couldn't figure out how to play solitaire. She said try and go to sleep,
call back in an hour if they haven't changed and I'll spend the night.
I went to sleep & woke up at an hour later from the crack of my water
beaking. Called Jen (mw) and she booked to get here (up the canyon from
Boulder a half hour drive.)

Contrax right away were *hard*, thank god I only had about 10 of them! On
the way from the bathroom I couldn't make it to the tub and had to lean over
the ottoman for a contraction, when I CHANNELLED TODD GASTALDO!! I heard a
voice clear as day (in my head of course) that said "Open your birth canal"
(up to 30% I thought) so I spread my knees for this contraction. Then I had
dh help me back into the pool, and the next contrax my knees were about 4
feet apart and I thought, "This feels like crowning" so I reached down and
felt 5 inches of head coming out. "The head is coming out!" I said to dh
about 3 times, each time he responded "What?" thinking it was wishful
thinking. Then I thought "I don't want to do this again" so I kept going
until the head came out! "The HEAD is OUT" I said in a commanding voice
like my mw did for my son's birth last year. I figured I'd fill in for her.
"What?" said dh. He is not usually this thick, he was still half asleep.
Repeat statements, and he walked around the tub to my back and said "The
head is out!!" with shock and amazement. duh thinks I.

We both remembered Jen's advice for unassisted birth- rule #1 don't pull on
the head. rule #2 the body must come in out in the next contrax after the
head, if stuck then wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle and stand up #3 don't pull
on the placenta.

Ed says "Moe you have to get the body out remember "wiggle wiggle wiggle and
stand up" I rest for 30 seconds over the side of the pool, then the next
contrax I stand up, and whoosh out comes the body. DH scoops him up, "It;s
a boy!" and hands him to me. My new boy, my sweet little guy was in my
arms- gorgeous but purple as anything. Then I start to panic because he's
limp and not breathing. I started to jostle him up down "breathe, breathe
breathe!" it was the scariest moment of my life, then Ed ran to the deck -
the midwives arrived and he yells to them "Hurry the baby's born" and they
run upstairs. "He's fine, good job, wonderful" and DS starts a snuffly
breath. Relief! Time? 11:54am, about 1/2 hour.

My 3 yr old girl came upstairs about 1/2 hour after the birth carrying a toy
for the new baby. DH says "Your new baby is here" She says very sagely "I
know, that's why I brought a toy up" and then proceeds to bob around
happily helping out and feeding me ice chips. "Mommy, its like sewing"
The midwives then helped me to bed, delivered placenta, gave me about 3
stitches, checked vitals on me and son, drained the pool and gave Bach's
Rescue remedy for my shakes. They left around 3:30am after tea with DH and
feeding me scrambled eggs, strawberries and ice cream and chocolate chip
cookies.

YAY!! I'm SOOOO happy I will never be pregnant again. I'm even happier to
finally have my new little son in my arms.
He's nursing fine- though of course, I worry cuz its just colostrum, will my
milk come in, isn't he hungry etc etc. But I way prefer new baby worries to
pregnancy worries.

Thanks for listening!!!
Moe

hour :)

It's a flower essence combination that you buy already mixed (otherwise you
buy several other flower essences and mix them together to make it). You
can get it at any good health food/herbal store.

It's scare-tactics, plain and simple. I read a couple of his posts but
they freaked me out and gave NO helpful information at all, so I
killfiled him too. I'd much rather hear a wonderful waterbirth story
like this one than hear about how doctors are evil woman-butcherers out
to kill babies and make a fast buck. Where is the helpful information
in that??

It's good for an outrageous kid tantrum ;) It's also good for moms of kids
having outrageous tantrums ;) We've given it to moms who are having a bout
of anxiety in labor (transition). Given it to babies postpartum who are
having a hard time adjusting (but homeopathic aconite is good for that too).
That said, I don't recall ever giving to someone for shakes... come to think
of it, I hardly ever see a mom with pp shakes.

Come to think of it, we had a gathering once where one toddler was stung
with a bee and put it directly on the sting and there was no pain; gave it
to a mom whose toddler had taken a walk away from the gang. Worked wonders
with both.

I had read it was pretty common. Any idea why some moms have it and
some don't? Is it something I'll likely have again since I did with #1?

| Contrax right away were *hard*, thank god I only had about 10 of them! On

| the way from the bathroom I couldn't make it to the tub and had to lean
over
| the ottoman for a contraction, when I CHANNELLED TODD GASTALDO!! I heard
a
| voice clear as day (in my head of course) that said "Open your birth
canal"

| The midwives then helped me to bed, delivered placenta, gave me about 3
| stitches, checked vitals on me and son, drained the pool and gave Bach's
| Rescue remedy for my shakes. They left around 3:30am after tea with DH
and
| feeding me scrambled eggs, strawberries and ice cream and chocolate chip
| cookies.
|

| YAY!! I'm SOOOO happy I will never be pregnant again. I'm even happier
to
| finally have my new little son in my arms.
| He's nursing fine- though of course, I worry cuz its just colostrum, will
my
| milk come in, isn't he hungry etc etc. But I way prefer new baby worries
to
| pregnancy worries.

My midwife brings it with her every time. I think shakes are pretty common,
at least among the moms I talk to. I got them all 3 times. Not anything
huge or life threatening, just no fun. I've never used anasthesia don't
know anything about it. My gf had them at her birth and Bach's worked right
away for her too.
Cheers, Moe

Thanks, Moe! You're right, it's no big deal, but it would be nice to
have something to stop them.
