No quotes yet--Rich suggested they be used for the dialogue in
the next installment of the Ballads of Nasturtium, which I took
as a challenge. We'll see how that goes.

In the meantime... the con seemed to go fairly smoothly. I made
sure everyone was prepared for really hot really dry weather, so
naturally it rained. Colin got some good footage of Euclid River
(Avenue on the map) with Tucson drivers barreling through the
running water.

Wednesday I fixed dinner for the earlybirds at Nichole's house
(which is *much* closer to the hotel than mine is).
Unfortunately Nichole had to work (thank you Nichole for letting
us use your place), but Dom was there, as were nymblin, Aimee and
Jason, JB, Keith and Kismet Rhodes (not a usenet junkie, but
maybe soon). I think there might have been someone else. What
can I say? My head's not right. For the insanely curious, we
had chips and salsa, pico de gallo ensalada de jicama (jicama
salad), and glop.

Thursday, most of the other conners arrived. We ate at Mi
Nidito, a wonderful Mexican restaurant in South Tucson, once
visited by the President Bill Clinton, and Keith commented that
Hyoun sat in Clinton's assprint.

Friday saw most conners go shopping on Fourth Avenue. David
(SmoothRat), Aimee and I went shopping. I think David likes
shopping with Aimee and me. (Can I get this? It's on
sale--$4.99!) Then we had the pizza party at Zachary's where Ed
the Bastard joined the group (if only for the evening).

Saturday was the Desert Museum (and Rosser's arrival). We were
very careful not to leave anyone behind this time. We had the
banquet and Rosser dj'd (excellent job). (Setlist has been
posted.)

The auction appears to have been a major success--Nadyne will
post on that sometime later this week or next, but preliminary
figures show it being far and away the best we've ever done.
Sunday evening saw some of us get stuffed on sushi, while others
got stuffed on Indian food. There is a blossoming rmta tradition
at this particular Indian restaurant--April 2000, Ed the Bastard
ordered a dish that arrived empty; this year, Keith ordered
something similar (both times, the food eventually arrived, but
the empty plates were a surprise). A bunch of us ended up
staying up, talking absolute shit until something like 4 in the
morning.

Today the departures. These things never seem to last long
enough. It's always good to see the people you wish you could
see more often than you do get to.

And to provide further evidence that my head's not right, Kismet
did not partake of dinner on Wednesday--we didn't meet her until
later.

that was yet another surreal arizona thing for me. my hydrophobia
only came into play slightly as i watched tree limbs speeding down the
street...

did i mention how good that was? no? well, it was really really
really good.

yes, thank you nichole. i was so bummed that you got stuck working.

mi nidito was pretty good. :)

bramble loot: a new pentacle with a purple stone and some celtic

i'm only slightly sad over having been outbid. but mostly i'm glad
the item in question went for as much as it did. (keith & jb's peanuts
shirt.)

the indian food was wonderful, and exactly what i needed at the time.
(vegetable korma, mild. sweet lassi. garlic naan.) it was a nice,
relaxed meal, in a nice, laid-back, mostly quiet setting. perfect for
sunday night, IMHO.

i was very glad to get to spend more time with Lydia this year. if
only i weren't so annoyingly tongue-tied most of the time. i must
also thank lydia for introducing me to the afrocelt sound system,
which i must promptly track down and purchase stuff by upon my return
from camp.

thank you, Lydia, for being such an awesome local organizer, and for
taking such good care of nymblin's travel needs throughout the con. :)

you deserve it.

I wish the con could've been held in the Spring when all the cacti are
blooming, and the Spring sun drips off the rock formations, and the
animals are randy... er... um... I mean... I wish the con could've
been held in the Autumn, when the weather is cool(ish) but not rainy,
and the Autumn sun delicately glazes the rock formations and casts
shadows of various colors, and the animals are active and not staying
in the shade...

I feel that way most of the time, too, but I console myself that I
usually end up regretting most of what I do say, so it's probably for
the best that I'm only a chatterbox here.

:) ACSS is really cool--and you didn't even hear the entire album.

My pleasure.

Thanks. Unfortunately, it's not smooth, quick, or complete. But
that's not something I want to get into here. At least not yet.
(Probably not ever...)

The plan was to watch Pi and then Requiem for a Dream. We watched Pi.
Wow. Just, wow. Wow. I can't imagine watching *anything*
immediately after watching Pi. Wow.

The next day, after lunch, I took Rosser to my favorite video rental
store (some 30,000 titles), where we picked up the other movies we
reviewed. After browsing the dvd selections (and picking up one that
we ended up not watching, though I will in the not too distant
future), we headed upstairs, where there's a shelf devoted to Akira
Kurosawa (mmm...) where we found "I Live in Fear," then back
downstairs where we picked up "The Moderns" and "The Fountainhead."
Oh, my. Weird selection of movies, but, the more I think about it,
the more appropriate it seems, considering the viewers...

yes. :) the blister continues to heal. the book is more than halfway
finished. the pentacle's been worn repeatedly. the iguana got a

yeah, 'cause that way you can feel like you're about to go over the edge
every time you look out the window! *shudder*

sorry, but we do not have *anything* like that in the midwest unless you
include ice-covered on- and off-ramps. the whole drive reminded me of
when i was in college driving home during a storm and my car nearly slid
off and on-ramp, which would've plunged me to my death -- or at least
certain injury!

You weren't supposed to look *down*! You were supposed to look at all
the cool rock formations and stuff...

Now *that's* scary... it's also why I never go to the Desert Museum in
winter. We do get *some* winter-type weather, and occasionally we get
ice on Gates Pass (for those who don't know, that's the stretch of
road under discussion).

oh, and if you ever feel like sharing the chicken recipe ... you've

>Friday saw most conners go shopping on Fourth Avenue.

my main spoils for the shopping trip were the blue dress i wore on
saturday during the day, and a black long sleeve shirt with purple and
white stitched flowers around the edges. i fell in love with a bit of
rainbow obsidian (i'm pretty sure that's what she said it was) but
couldn't justify the money for it. i did pick up an obsidian needle,
but that seems to have gone missing, sadly. i would've bought a lot
more, but i was trying really hard to be good with money, and to not
hold everyone back.

yummy pizza. quite a good thing.

the desert museum was incredible. the drive there was breathtaking,
and i would've been nagging you to stop so i could take photos at
every opportunity if i thought there was enough time.

i was in arizona once, in 1998, and while i didn't get to see very
much, i fell in love with the different landscape, plants, and
animals. i confirmed that impression several times over during this
trip, much of which was on saturday. it was just beautiful.

i saw hummingbirds for the first time and could've spent a very long
time in that one enclosure. i got to play with an otter. i got some
gorgeous photographs of various creatures. lydia makes an excellent

Yeah, that was the most disappointing part of that evening.

<snip dinner>
:oh, and if you ever feel like sharing the chicken recipe ... you've

:got a willing recipient here. :)

First, you need to make adobo by combining 1 Tbsp. garlic powder, 1
Tbsp. onion powder, 1 Tbsp. dried oregano, 1/2 Tbsp. salt, and 1/2
Tbsp. black pepper in a small glass jar and shaking well.

Season the chicken (I used boneless, skinless breast meat) with the
adobo. Combine 2 Tbsp. golden or spiced rum (I used Bacardi gold)
with 1/4 cup honey. (At this point, I heated the honey-rum in the
microwave for about 15 seconds on high to make it easier to mix them.)
Cook the chicken in a pan (I used a little olive oil in the pan).
When the chicken is about halfway done, drizzle some of the honey-rum
over the meat and continue cooking. Add more adobo and more honey-rum
to taste until the chicken is done.

visit the desert.

dunno. it didn't do what i expected it to do. at some point, i'll
have to give it another shot with someone who really got into it, see
if that changes my perspective. i still need to see requiem for a
dream, too.

movies colin and i watched in the past week:

altered states
benny & joon
american beauty
the deer hunter
once were warriors
bad girls
a teensy bit of war of the worlds
bits of pulp fiction after the deer hunter, including the christopher
walken bit to shift my mindset somewhat
bits of the matrix, to look for one of the actors from once were
warriors

we're going to sit down shortly to watch breaking the waves. almost
three hour film. starting sometime after midnight. why not? i'm
definitely milking vacation while i still can.

not at all. you're a very good driver.

it never even occurred to me to look for them.

bits you may have forgotten at that point. i do hope this ordeal ends
soon, though. :/

:dunno. it didn't do what i expected it to do.

I'm not sure exactly what I expected it to do. I wasn't too familiar
with it aside from various and sundry recommendations, and I think for
some reason I thought it would be kind of antiseptic (don't know why).
If my expectations had been much closer to the mark, it might not've
been quite the "wow" experience it was, so I'm glad that whatever
preconceptions I had were so wrong.

<snip>
:movies colin and i watched in the past week:
<snip list>

I need to see some of those. I need to see some others of those again
(I think it's been twelve years since I've seen Deer Hunter...).

Lately I've been buying music. Well, trading for it, anyway. The
store I like has a $0.99 sale going on where the cd's they've been
trying to get rid of but can't are on sale for $0.99. Among my
purchases: bel canto, tarot bolero, and (no kidding) quayle. Of
those, I've only listened to the bel canto cd. eleven was also in the
$0.99 bin, but I've already got that one. Among my other purchases:
Juliana Hatfield, Birmingham 6, Tom McRae, Baaba Maal, and a T-Rex
tribute cd that I've found quite entertaining (mmm...glam).

Another "need to see" movie. I'm trying to get through all the movies
that were nominated for Y2K Oscars (major categories), but I'm
delaying Quills until I find and read a good [1] biography of De Sade.
