Current Understanding of Mental Illness - Consequences

Mental illness is as little understood today, as bacteria and viruses
were understood and known in the Middle Ages.
Any treatment of mental illness then, especially the highly impersonal
treatment from a mental hospital, is likely therefore to do more
damage to the 'patient' than if he was not treated at all.
And he would be better off and probably improving dramatically if
left alone and unmolested, or under supervision and equally
unmolested, doing gardening or farming or forest work or cleaning
the parks, and probably doing lots of sports or games of any kind,
and possibly doing creative, self-determined art and music.
Consequences For Patients, From Current Level Of Understanding
Exactly because and where any and all understanding of mental illness
is lacking completely but nevertheless is pretended to exist - not
unlike in the Middle Ages about infections - it can be found quite
often, that those professionals who "treat" the 'mentally ill,' are
driven, sometimes entirely, by hidden and quite malicious intentions
to spiritually harm their 'patients.'
Patients that are already weakened and uncertain to begin with,
and that have been made still weaker and are less able to
defend themselves because of the very circumstances of the
treatment, and who are given the most insane, the wildest and
completely false ideas - ideas given to them often with great
authority, always with hidden arrogance and often in complete
denial of their feelings and their perceptions - ideas given
to them in the course of their "treatment," laughably insane
ideas, diagnoses given to them authoritatively (or hidden from
them with even more authority) about the nature and cause of
their condition, about their 'mental illness.'
Current "Definition" Of 'Mental Illness'
The current "definition" of 'mentally ill' is indeed mostly "that
what the doctor isn't, and what the patient is." The verdict then
of course depends fully on the condition of the doctor, or also, in
practice, on who pays or who dictates to the doctor, or who could get
him fired, or discredited for undermining the trust of the public
in his collegues.
If a doctor can not admit to the fact that the subject of mental
illness is not at all understood, neither by himself nor by his
colleagues, then he is himself highly insane indeed, from a purely
professional viewpoint that I as an engineering physicist must and
do subscribe to.
What Is Advisable Under The Current Conditions
So, even though the statement of Dan Rogers (* quoted below) is en-
tirely correct, for practical purposes as will prevail probably still
another fifty or even a hundred years in the Western society (and in
China too), it seems rather true and applicable, that someone convic-
ted (who has been compelled by criminal minds to commit crimes) might
be less harmed or not harmed in a prison, neither spiritually, nor
physically-mentally by "medicines," while in a mental hospital he is
likely to undergo irreparable spiritual damage, and physical-mental
torture by drugs and other treatment:
"Treatment" that is all based on the above-mentioned state of
the science - a misunderstanding of 'mental illness,' or rather
an intentionally 'reversed understanding' of it - an "under-
standing," and practices based thereon, that will be judged,
in a few centuries or less from now, to have been unimaginably
barbaric ...to have been uncivilized beyond any belief.
How To Study Mental Illness
If you want to know something about the mentally ill, then you first
have to acquire some actual knowledge about the sane - which was
never done even vaguely properly by anyone ...even though the data
was and is lying all over the place.
Only when you know that, then can you find out when something is
wrong and when it isn't, what is ill and what isn't.
Simple engineering logic and practice.
Which I did - even though it is virtually impossible in the 'endless
morasses' and 'shiny clouds' and forceful pretenses that are offered
with the greatest certainty as "THE knowledge about man."
The offering, globally and throughout recorded history, was a mixture
of endlessly conflicting and entirely inadequate data, that do not
satisfy an engineering, mathematical and highly inquisitive and very
intelligent mind - a mind that also has a shield of so much beauty
that it can sustain even the severest attacks - and, on top of that
and most important of all, a mind that is capable of, and does main-
tain a tremendous amount of feeling and love for people.
