I've been saying for thirty years now that shared joy increases. If so,
we're all gonna be neck-deep in the stuff in a second.
I am collaborating on a novel with Robert A. Heinlein.
No, really.
I have just been given final approval by the Heinlein Trust to write a
novel based on a detailed outline created by Robert in 1955. It will be
billed as "Robert A. Heinlein's VARIABLE STAR, by Spider Robinson." The
book proposal is even now being prepared for market by my (and Robert's)
agent Eleanor Wood. The first 10,000 words are already written.
I don't suppose any of you need to be told what this means to me, nor
could I express it. Honoured … terrified … exhilarated … all those are
in there, and more.
Some writers enjoy writing. I'm the other kind: I enjoy *having
written*. But these last few weeks, for almost the first time in thirty
years, the writing itself has been a pure and holy joy. Which I share
now with you.
Wish me luck.

Wow... For about a month now, I have been absent from AFH, mostly due to
work and other demands on my time. Today, for some reason, I decided to
check the NG out... and look what I find... wow... double wow.
Mr. Robinson; best of luck in this endeavour.

If you have the Trust's and Eleanor Wood's confidence, I wouldn't
question their choice even if I were so inclined. Although I haven't
read as much of your work [or anyone else's SF work] in the past
decade or so as I would have liked, I have always enjoyed it. I have
every confidence that you will do justice to RAH's outline.
O frabjous joy! First "For Us the Living", now "Variable Star". A
lot of additional stuff on the Thanksgiving plate this year.

To be fair, it is possible to read a book without having paid for it,
and not having stolen it. Borrowing from a library or a friend's book
collection are two non-pay sources that come to mind, offhand.
(I have no idea about whether this describes Armando's situation, not
being an ABSFRH [or however you shorten it :P ] regular. It is a
possibility, though.)
OTOH, though, I don't know of all that many people who take "this is
utter crap" (paraphrase) without qualifications as anything other than
completely ignorable frothing. YMMV*, of course.

Well, then, Mr. Billingham ... since you presumably excel Spider as an
author (why else would you call him or his works "crap"?), perhaps you
should try your own luck at getting into print and/or at getting the
Heinlein Society to give you permission to finish unfinished RAH works
...
;-S
I'd take some interest in seeing how your work stacks up against
Spider's (or RAH's) literarily and in terms of sales.
While I found his post ungracious at best, I have to admit that I
assumed that he had simply read a couple of your books after checking
them out of the library or simply sat and read them IN the library.
While I have bought most of your books, I have also checked some of
them out of the library, borrowed the collection _Antimony_ from a
friend as it was OP and even read most of the first Callahan's in Book
World. I would have bought it but we had sold out of it before my next
shift. Is that stealing? While I strongly disagree with his literary
taste, I don't know that he's a thief.

You, however, over-reacted. Actually, when dealing with trolls as in

Are you contractually able to drop us any crumbs about topics /

Actually, if anyone had bothered to ask me, my top two choices for
this project would have been you and / or David Gerrold. Then again,
this would have given David yet another reason not to finish the
