Hi all,

The second preview of Opera 7 for Linux is now available.
Please note that this is a preview. It has not been
tested as much as it would have been had it been a final
release. It is not feature complete and it may be unstable in
some cases.

Since this is a preview release it is advised to backup the local
~/.opera directory in the home directory before you start to use
preview 2

The packages are available here:
http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/intel-linux/365-20030307-7.0.0-P2/

Please take a look at this file as well to determine what
package to select:
http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/intel-linux/365-20030307-7.0.0-P2/whatpackage.txt

There is no version ready for RedHat 8x/Mandrake 9x at the
moment. We hope to have a build ready early next week for those
distributions.

If you have any comments or questions please send them to the
opera.linux news group or the opera-linux mail list. We (the UNIX
team) monitor those lists.

If you send a message please do not reply to this announce. Instead,
make a new message with a title that describes the issue. That way it
is simpler to sort out the different replies.

Changelog:

- Support for preferred fonts (in International Fonts in Preferences)d:
- Support for codepage where relevant (Oriental languages)
- More intelligent loading of Xft libraries, to avoid crashes
- A number of other page layout issues and bugs.

Bookmarks:
- Support for import for Netscape html based bookmark file.
- Support for Internet Explorer bookmark import.
- Support for KDE1 bookmark import
- Support for Konquerer bookmark import
- Support for Open and New
- Support form sorted bookmark menus (main menu bar and in personal bar)
- Support for contact menu lists (used in the mail window - add contact button)
- Added a workaround for a crash problem in the bookmark list
- Various minor fixes.

Startup dialog box:
- The start dialog box will now be shown if Opera crashed in the
previous session.
- Some fixes for the startup dialog box. It did not work 100% as
it should. The Buy button did not work.
- Corrected wrong behavior in the startup code. The kind of startup
mode could end up being another than what the user wanted.

Command line arguments:
- Added new remote command "lower()" which will lower the main window
- Added new command line option "noraise" which will prevent the
window that receives a remote command to raise on top of the rest
of the windows.

Window manager interaction:
- Fixed a problem that caused modal dialog boxes to block the help
window.
- A number of fixes to bypass a problem in Qt. The WM_CLASSNAME
property is not set (at least in some versions of Qt3) so it is
now set manually. The WM_CLASSNAME property is used by some window
managers to group windows.

Focus:
- Located a fix for a longstanding and nasty focus issue that prevented
proper initial keyboard input when a dialog was shown.
- Various other fixes.

Misc:
- Enabled the registration dialog box.
- Enabled a proper "confirm insecure submit" dialog with a "do not show
again" checkbox.
- Opera for Linux 7 is now able to convert saved "win" files (window
sessions) for version 5 and 6 of Opera for Linux.
- Fixed a (nasty) bug in the history panel that made it possible to not update
the history file after an item was deleted.
- The dropdown widgets on the address bar can now activate the dropdown
list by using the down arrow
- Fixed a rather nasty keyboard/mouse blocking problem that would
occur if a modal dialog box got visible while panning (autoscrolling)
was activated.

Enjoy,

I tried the static version on Mandrake 9.1rc2 and I get an error which makes
all buttons and text invisible:

I have not looked into that yet. Can you try to use the -geometry start
option? (example: opera -geometry 600x800+100+100)

If you have another window manager available it would be interesting to
know if the maximize problem is there as well.

The "Could not initialize VXML component" is not important.

The ini files are required for proper operation.

Where have you installed the ini directory?
The default install will put it in /usr/share/opera/ini

Java support has not been enabled yet.

Did the description that came with code say it would work for 6 and 7?

> can't change the button.ini

The button.ini is no longer used. We use a set of other ini files
(but you can not configure the main toolbar in this release - known issue)

Well, in my case I used the static RPM and yes, the ini directory seems to
be in /usr/share/opera/ini

In my case, Preview 2 is completely unusable as the text is missing in most
part of the Opera UI.

And you still can not load the ini files? If so Opera looks in the wrong place
for some reason.

"Opera UI" but not in the document area? right?

Seems to happen on on Mandrake 9x. We will try to release a package on monday
made on mdk 9.0

This error message is not important. Please ignore it.

I'll leave it to Espen to figure out where your buttons and text
have gone...

Exactly. The document area is ok. Menus also look normal (File, Edit, etc)
and I can e.g. open preferences normally. Ads also appear ok.

But:
- The startup dialog box has no text at all.
- Main toolbar is gone.
- No text in hotlist

Well, the static builds usually work with any version.

That's why I usually use them instead of the dynamic ones.

Well, I am not sure yet what causes this, but in any case it
will be interesting to se what happens with the "right" build.

This error probably isn't related to your problem at all. Tried
renaming your ~/.opera directory?

Yay! Finally... sane window management again. Thank you. (Any
chance of back porting that fix to the Opera 6.1x version?)

I see the same thing here with icewm 1.2.0. I thought maybe the
startup script was the culprit so I put the opera-6.11 binary in
place of the opera-7 binary, ran the script and geometry options
worked fine. Once I put the opera-7 binary back in place all geometry
arguments became null. It starts fully maximized no matter what I
ask it to do.

FWIW,
Jonathan

Hmm, with Icewm I get a "normal" maximized window with title bar and
buttons. Of course I get it even when I request a smaller geometry.

I should have mentioned in the release mail (I forgot, sorry) that
the preference dialog box is not ready yet.

Just for comparison ... I have ML 9.0 and 9.1b2 (busy downloading RC2
in the background just now). I installed in 9.0 over 6.11, and in
9.1b2 over O7P1. I have no font problems in either - just the toolbar
problem mentioned earlier, and no Java (also mentioned earlier). Oh,
and a poorly-configured mail account in 9.0, I thought I'd try
importing but M2 doesn't recognize kmail's account info.

Oh, in KDE3, Opera is remembering its window size - I haven't tried
other WMs yet. It originally opened maximized, but I resized it, and
the following times (3 or 4) it has opened at the size and state I
left it in.

New bug? I don't browse with Maximized windows. After opening a mail
window (which is maximized) and then closing it, the browser window
which was in a windowed state behind it becomes maximized. Used both
the close gesture and the window-close button, both did the same thing
- but not 100% of the time.

Steve (sgunhouse from the MyOpera forums)

PS - no, I don't do news, I'm reading this on Google, I may not see
replies in the group. No reply necessary, unless you need more details
on something.
