Hello,

Maybe I'm stupid, but I can't seem to figure out how to install the
appropriate fonts for MathML on Mac OS X. I'm trying on Mozilla 1.1.
Could someone tell EXACTLY what I need to get, and where they should go?

Thanks.

You need to install the Mathematica fonts. They are available from

Also, *contrary* to what Mozilla itself tells you, you should make sure
you *don't* have TeX fonts installed in any of the Fonts folders. (A
teTeX installation won't disturb Mozilla, because the fonts that come
with teTeX aren't available to other apps.)

Thanks for the tip. That must have been what I was doing wrong.
However, when I go to http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/start.xml,
I'm warned that I'm missing some TeX fonts.

Also, when I go to the mathematica page you listed, I see a MacOSX
version of the fonts, and a Mac OS 9 version, but the OSX version is
corrupt. However, the OS 9 version appears to work. Does anyone know
what the difference in the fonts is?

Thanks.

I have updated the math font page to warn about this unresolved Mac issue:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts/

The update also gives a clue as to how to block the missing font
popup dialog that you are getting. Just add the following line in
your prefs.js (or your user.js):

user_pref("font.mathfont-family", "Math1, Math2, Math4, Symbol");

(For background info about how to set preferences in Mozilla, see:
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.0/#setprefs)

OK, now there's no warning after I created a user.js. However, when I
go start.xml, I see all greek characters, instead of roman. Also, most
of the left fences are in visible pieces.

You haven't _un-installed_ the TeX fonts that you first tried and they
are still hanging there, right? In this case, delete this font-family line
in your Mozilla's bin/res/mathml.css:
http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/layout/mathml/content/src/mathml.css#38
38 font-family: CMSY10, Symbol, Times, Lucida Sans Unicode, MT Extra, Math1, Math2, Math3, Math4, Math5, serif;

I thought I'd uninstalled them. I can't find them anywhere, but your
suggestion fixed the symbol problem. However, the left fences are still
often in pieces.

Thanks for your help! (And it's too bad that NS7.0 on the mac doesn't
have MathML.

Is this a similar problem as bug 161155?

The STIX project is promising support for Macs. They claim
to be roughly 2/3 of the way towards completion.
