Is this True? Can anybody confirm this??
Or I guess NDA will force people to remain tight-lipped even if they are in
a position to confirm this?
I am asking this since we are in the final stages of development of a
DataSnap application. While we have decided to pass on the Datasnap
licensing cost to our customers in case of medium to large installations (a
smaller part of our business and, bcos they can afford it), we are still in
a dilemma with regards to our small-medium customers (who will be the bulk
of our business) for whom a $300 datasnap license could cost a lot.
So we were contemplating on using some other 3rd part solutions (like ASATA
etc) and totally eliminate DataSnap from our project.
However if the above news is True then we would be happy to upgrade to D7
and stay with DataSnap!
Thanks,
Vikram

It is true for D7 Enterprise owners, yes.

Correct. The purchase price of Delphi 7 Enterprise will include an unlimited
deployment license for DataSnap servers.
The licensing change also explicitely allows Delphi 7 Pro users to use
ClientDatasets as a local database. You can distribute applications that use
"briefcase" ClientDataset files to multiple machines without having to pay for
a deployment license, as long as that data is only stored locally and does not
get resolved back to the persistent store on another machine.
If a Pro user decides he or she wants to create an application using a
DataSnap server, they simply need to purchase an Enterprise version. Everyone
who works on developing the DataSnap server application must have a legal copy
of Enterprise (or above).
I am currently drafting a new article for BDN about the new DataSnap licensing
that will go into more detail, but this information should be sufficient to
answer the question.

Enjoy.

Still part of the horse, though? <g>
It's a good idea. I say this because I seem to recall having it, a
little while back :-)

That's an interesting interpretation of what Dave said... I believe he meant something
else, given the context... But, it works both ways... ;-)

I did not say that. Kylix 3 is included in the new terms of the DataSnap
licensing.

John, please make sure that the royalty-free unlimited server deployment with the D7
enterprise SHOULD BE ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IN ALL OF YOUR MARKETING.
