Hello All,

Can anyone please help me with a DECServer 700 problem.
The Decserver is used to access terminals from a LAN, and one of the
terminals requires a "break" condition to be applied to the RS232 line
before it will bring up the login prompt.
I have tried everything that I can see in the configuration of the
server, but can't get it to pass a break condition.
Has anyone any ideas ( firstly, can it be done?).

For completeness, I telnet into the decserver using the approprite
port ( 2005 ), and from there need to be able to map a key that the
decserver will understand and pass the break condition down the port
to the terminal.

Any suggestions would be gladly received.

thanks in advance

I don't think so - that is to say, I never managed to do it.

There is a way to configure a DECserver port to pass the BREAK condition. I
don't remember off-hand what it was though.

I once managed the following config:

[terminal]----[Decserver 200]----ethernet----[DECserver 200]-----[OPA0: of a VAX]

One of the requirements was to have the terminal issue the BREAK to the VAX to
get the >>> prompt from the remote vax.

As I recall, you need to redefine the key to get you to the Local> prompt to
something else than break, and also do one of the set commands to make the
break transparent.

This was on DECserver 200s with modem control.

I have a PDP-11/83 console connected to port 13 on a 700-16.

I enabled the telnet listener on all ports and then enabled connections
on port 2013

$ telnet ds701 2013 /term=vt500 /log=pdp11

Here is the log of a telnet session to port 2013 on my DS 700-16.

So, yes you can send a break to an external terminal remotely via
telnet.
But I don't know how you can map a key to do SEND BRK in telnet.

Give the guys at Digital Networks a call @ 1-877-341-9594, they still
support the DECserver and can give all the info on connfigurations/setup.
If that doesn't work try Dennis Majikas @ 603-589-0324.

IIRC there is a SET/DEFINE PORT <port#> BREAK command. At least on
DS200/300's
so given DEC's sense for upwards compatibility it's there on the DS700 too.
What it does is allow you to define a substitute character for the BREAK
char.
That way you can send BREAK to a remote OPA0: device across two DECservers
(one running reverse LAT).
