Hello,

I'm running SCO Unix OSR5.06, with 3x18Gb SCSI hdd in RAID-5.
If I'd want to add 1 or 2 hdds , is it possible to upgrade /dev/u disk
space or will I have to re-install the OS ?

Thank's.

depending on how big the filesystem is now, and how the raid is laid out,
and what raid card you have (thus, what raid utility program) yes, by
installing the new drives, mkfs and mount on /mnt, copy contents of /u to
/mnt, then umount /u, umount /mnt, vi /etc/default/filesys, mount /u again.
you would wind up with some un-used space where /u used to be, since you
couldn't grow / to make use of it.

the real ansewer is the same as always... make a full backup with a
supertar, make another just to reduce the risk of a bad tape, install the
new drives and reconfigure the raid array to suit your desires, use the
supertar boot disk to recreate the same filesystems, but of different sizes
than before, restore from backup.

however, you could do the first way with only less than a minute or two of
downtime, since you'd only have to reboot once after running mkdev hd, with
no "off" time before, during, or after the reboot. you would have to suspend
activity on /u while you are copying it, but otherwise it can all be done
while up and running, including physically installing the drives, if they
are in hot-swap bays. maybe to minimiz downtime but still not waste drive
space, you could do the first process to create a new bigger /u, then use a
supertar just for / and not /u, which would let you use the whole original
drive for / and be fairly fast backing up and restoring since it should only
be about a gig. You'd end up with a huge / though. that in itself is
probably a waste.

You won't have to reinstall the OS. See

Ooops- didn't see the RAID.

You can add another drive, but whether or not that can be separate from
the existing RAID depends on your controller- most CAN handle multiple
arrays, but you need to see if yours does. If it does not, yes, you'll
have to "reinstall", but that's painless with one of the Supertars -

The question is not very clear.
Is the RAID5 array your only storage?
I.e. does it contain both your / and /u?

Be the answers as thay may, I can only repeat
what others already said: much will depend on
the raid-controller utility software.
