Hi!

I'm not a backgammon player but I desperately need to know the
average number of moves in a backgammon game for comparison purposes.

TIA

I'm guessing 10-20 for each player. But just a guess. I played a 13 point
match, 18 games last night that took 427 moves for both players, so 427/18/2
= ~11, but quite a few of these games ended with an early double and drop.
I would think 15 would be more likely.

I've looked in my account manager in Snowie. It informs me that over 234
games against it there a total of 15950 moves.
That makes about 68 moves per game.

It counts each persons move as a move so it's about 34 'paired' moves per
game.

This seems to be an extremely high number (34 moves per player per game).
How many of these games are 1 point matches? This will have a huge bearing
on the results. If the sample is from 7 point matches or larger the moves
per game will be much smaller as large numbers of games will end with a cube
turn, instead of being played to completion. If they are 1,2 or 3 point
matches, most of the games are played to the end.

I looked in the account manager and immediately realized that I had been
counting online matches in coming up with the total number of moves whereas I
had only counted Snowie matches towards the number of games played.

By restricting my selection to only Snowie matches the totals are 12191 moves,
269 games.

That works out to be 45 unpaired moves or 22 paired moves. Which is closer to
your totals. Thanks for putting me straight.

About 75% of my matches against Snowie are 7 pointers, the rest are mostly 3 or
5 pointers..

I'm now fairly happy with this number.

I just played a 7 pointer against Snowie. 391 moves 8 games. = 24 paired moves.

According to Snowie I only made two doubling errors, one missed double and one
premature double, so the cube was not a big factor in this match. (I made 1
incorrect take).

I just found an interesting feature in Frank Bergers BgBlitz. It gives you the
ability to analyze the games in a match database.

It reports the following for one of it's databases (the largest one of course).

Average Number of Moves in a Game
=================================
All Games : 20.90 (9423 games)
1 Pt Games : 27.42 ( 342 games)

Maximum Number of Moves in a Game
=================================
All Games : 85 moves
1 Pt Games : 68 moves

Total Matches 2806
Matchlength Avg. Games Total Matches
============================================

1 1.00 350
2 1.03 59
3 2.35 634
4 2.75 12
5 3.83 1184
6 4.00 1
7 5.02 492
8 6.00 1
9 7.24 42
11 7.81 31

Hope this helps.
