No dosage levels were mentioned. I looked in Michael Tierra's "The Way of
Herb." The dosage he recommends is "2-4 grams or 10-15 drops. To induce a
tranquil, euphoric state, up to 150 drops of the fluid extract can be
occasionally (not regularly) taken." Furthermore, he goes on to explain
"The Polynesians have found that large, frequent doses of kava kava can
cause dry skin and bloodshot eyes. These symptoms disappear after use is
discontinued."
I just looked in the PDR for Herbal Medicines. It also strongly advises
against chronic usage and the dangers of overdosing. I should also add that
it lists drugs it should not be used with and for those with certain
conditions: do not use kava with alcohol (increases hypnotic action; also
possibility of kava toxicity), Alprazolam (has resulted in coma), CNS
depressants such as barbituates (may potentiate the effectiveness of
substances that act on the central nervous system), psychoactive agents,
Dopamine (reported to antagonize the effect of Dopamine; patients with
Parkinson's Disease taking levopoda should avoid kava), and, of course,
pregnant woman and nursing mothers should not use it.
I've taken kava for those rare moments when I'm highly stressed, anxious
and/or tense, and it's been wonderfully helpful. But, yes, I wouldn't take
it regularly or for long-term periods.
Hope this helps! :o)

I take kava to help slow a tremor I have in my right side, but only take it
as needed. Not constantly and not every day. Until I find something
better.....
