about a year or two ago we ran a thread wherein any of us who
wished to do so could list any degree of personal information of a
biographical nature. the idea was, and is, to humanize this bunch, if
such an undertaking can be accomplished.
the thread turned out to be an excellent means to heighten
camaraderie and increase our mutual understanding. in the interim
many new names have begun to appear with some regularity, and it is
presumed that many more lurkers have come on board, albeit silently.
therefore, with the above goals in mind, and because i am
bored as hell this weekend, i would propose that we all cast aside our
cybermasks and let each other know a little bit about the real
roffians. although i will begin the process, by no means should my
post be considered a form to follow. any information, in any style,
is to be appreciated.
finally, i am aware that to many of us this information will
be old hat. however, i feel that we continue to grow, and knowing who
we are might be important to newcomers and visitors alike.
here goes:

name: anthony wayne harrison, sr.

190lbs.

triantis.

country. neil young, dylan, the stones; lyle lovett, waylon, willie,
early george jones.

favorite beverages: "see-throughs" (vodka, splash of tonic, no lime);
balvenie single malt; the rare hot weather heiniken.

favorite rod: any thomas & thomas.

favorite stream: can't tell everything. but hazel creek in the n.c.
smokies comes damn close.

oh, well, that's about enough for now. join in, tell us more,
or less, but tell us something.

from the old north state, i remain

extent, I think Louie and I were the first ROFFians to meet over a
long distance (in Maine), touching off the clave thing by our
over-the-top trip reports. Currently being touted as the carpmeister.

Booze - wine - preferbaly a full bodied red, Merlot usually. - scotch,

Good idea wayno. You forgot to add that you have a capital letter deficiency.
<g>

Name: David Paul LaCourse
aka: Louie LaPlac

Age: 63

I am 6 feet even (used to be 6'1"), and weigh in at 212.

I live in Hudson, Massachusetts, just down the road from Day Tripper and Paul
Goodwin. I was born in Springfield, Ma.

After 20 years in the navy, I retired in 1975. I retired from GTE Labs in 1992
on a "buy out", and currently am employed as chief cook and bottle washer for
my lovely and talented wife, Joanne. Two or three days each month, I help
teach high performance and pursuit driving to cops, or defensive driving to
teenagers (on the track).

I've been married twice, and have two wonderful, trouble-free daughters: Cindy
(38), the mother of two teenage sons (my fishing partners), and an adorable
daughter who is bugging her grandpa to take her fishing (10). Paula, my
youngest daughter (33) is a new mom of Brenden. My current and last wife,
Joanne, is from Georgia. She has a PhD in solid state physics and is employed
as a director at Verison.

Hobbies: I used to rally and race, but now confine myself to such activities
on TV. I tie most of my own flies, and have just recently started to tie
streamers.

Musical preferences: Modern/contemporary jazz, with emphasis on
Brubeck/Desmond, Mulligan, Oscar Peterson. I am force fed country/western by
Joanne - Willy, Kristopherson, etc.

Absolut Vodka. Beefeater Martinis. Dundee's Honey Brown. Sleeman's, when my
Canuck buddy can smuggle it in.

Favorite Rod: 9 ft Sage SP 4 weight and my 5 piece Winston 5 weight.

Favorite stream is the Rapid River, home for the Maine Clave, Septemter 10 -
16.

I've been to all three roff claves, and have gone fishing in Maine with Peter,
Tripper, and Paul Goodwin. Sorry to miss the wester clave, but I know that
Forty will "carry on" in the tradition we have set in NC.

I am currently working in a lumber mill and attending college trying to finish
off my degree. After that it is on to law school, I hope.

Marital Status: In the process of divorce. Have to make sure the next one ff's

Children: Jodee LaMay Findley, 13 months old.

I like hunting, fly fishing, fly tying, snowmobiling, camping, hiking, being
single again so I can go girlin', horseback riding and a whole host of others
activities.

As far as music goes I listen to just about anything except reggae. If I had
to pick one category I would say country, but I have a wide range. Some of my
favorites are Blink 182, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Social Distortion to Chris
LeDoux, Hank Jr, Mark Chestnutt, and Aaron Tippin just to name a few.

Favorite movies: Young Guns, Tombstone, anything with John Wayne or any western
with Clint Eastwood, Full Metal Jacket (from my days as a Marine) and American
Pie.

Areas I fish: Yellowstone, the Park, Gallatin, Madison and many others. I
prefer fishing rivers and streams, but I fish some small creeks and lakes as
well. My favorites I will never tell here and most likely not tell anyone.

Goals: To find a woman that is good looking, likes to fly fish and hunt, and
most importantly likes me. Also would like to become a world famous criminal
defense attorney such as the Great Wayno. BTW, thanks for the talk the other
day, really enjoyed it.

That should do it for now.

OK OK already, here goes....

Frank Church age 67 5 51/2" ht 175 lbs
reside in Elkhart, IN within 20 miles of my birthplace

Immediately after HS I joined the USAF, had a great 20 yr career and retired
in 1970. Divorced at that time so I split for Alaska and lived there for
apprx. 5 yrs. During part of that time I was employed as a flight instructor
at Elmendorf AFB, racked up about 900 hrs in the right seat and decided a
change was needed. Hired on with the FAA as air traffic specialist, and did
a little bush flying on the side. Left Alaska for California and finished
out my FAA career after 10 yrs. Returned to Indiana and took up contract
delivery of busses, trucks and RV's. Subsequently I met my wife-to-be in
the Philippines, married her and brought her back here. I have 3 kids from
my first marriage, all in their 40's, and 4 grandkids. I now drive
professionally only seldom, and when it suits my fancy (mostly deliver where
I want to fish)
Hobbies are FF'ing of course, and playing with my PC to the point of
causing it to crash on a fairly regular basis. My lovely wife's favorite
name for me is "boogerlips" when I've been good, and FRANK when I'm in the
doghouse.

Favorite music, a fairly eclectic mix from Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson
to Beethoven & Rossini, bluegrass, blues, zydeco, and of course, New Orleans
jazz.

Favorite drink...I stopped drinking the hard stuff years ago when I quit
smoking, so just keep a few cans of Coors in the fridge to slake my thirst
from time to time.

Favorite rods...what I have on hand now, my 3 Sage lightline rods in 2,4 & 6
wt, and my Cabela's 3 Forks and Stowaway rods. Plus a couple of St Croix to
fill my rod rack.

Favorite stream...hands down, no question, it's the Kennebec river in Maine
and the stretch I fish is just downstream of Skowhegan. Smallmouth heaven!

Likes: Wimmin

Dislikes: The possibility that *I* might expire before my driver's license.

Flyfish AKA

Dave Bottom
lives in Mechanic Falls Maine, near Lewiston-Auburn
47 - yikes - years old

flyfishing for 20+ years now, ever since the USN and I parted company

lemme see - latest gig is oracle dba, but I've been a NT, VMS, UNIX, HP-UX,
network, and operations manager at one time or another, actually an
electronics tech by education, former USN aircrew (E2-B) (3 wire anyone?)
Once I even printed checks for a living, legally, I still hate starter sets
to this day. I've worked for job shops, a fortune 500 who sadly no longer
exists, even though at one time we were the second largest computer
manufacturer in the world, a paper company and lately a plastics laminate
company.

divorced twice - beginning to see a trend here - father of two, Tom who is
12 and Mary who is 15. Both live with me, usually, right now they are
visiting Mom in NH, Mary might not come back for school - she tends to go
back and forth as she misses both of us from time to time. Thankfully my
relationship with the last X is good enough that this type of thing isn't a
problem for us. Currently I have a live in g/f who aside from being fairly
mellow, puts up with my PC pounding, flyfishing and guitar wailing. Last
year I even got her into a 17" brookie on a fly during the hex hatch. A few
more trips like that and she'll be hooked, right down to the bottom of her
bass fishing heart.

I flyfish, nothing else, no hunting, no ice fishing. I play a mean guitar -
once I amost got signed to a major label but like most bands, that's when we
started fighting, too old for such now and my ears ring all the time anyway,
but I'm still a gear whore with 9 guitars, 3 amps (2 are midi rack mount
setups) and an 8 track recording studio. My fishing gear whoring includes 4
graphites, and 8 bamboos now - I'm learning how to restore old bamboos and
enjoying it. My biggest accomplishment aside from the kids is having been a
prime mover and shaker in the early efforts to remove the Edwards dam in
Augusta. That we were successful amazes even me.

Name: Herman Nijland

Age: 38

Height and weight: I live in a metric country so do your math: 1,90
meters, 95 kilo (oopss..)

Residence: Utrecht, the Netherlands

Profession:
Webmaster for a research institute. Most enjoy the playing with asp's
and database driven stuff. So convinced that there's more than enough
shit on the web already that I'm quite reluctant to add a site of my
own.. unless a _really_ good reason shows up. Pondering/playing with a
setup for the valueable advice on rofft.

Marital status: Married to Karin, two kids: a girl, Kira age 4 and a
boy, Koen, age 2. Kira probably won't be fishing for long, but I can see
that Koen, no matter how young he still is, has it in him to become a
fisherman. If he wants to, of course. Or is this wishful thinking?

Hobbies and interests apart from FF:
Cooking (hence the oops), the kids, fiddling around with my computer,
birdwatching (just bought myself some small binoculars to add to the
immense bulk of stuff to take when I'm going fishing)

Musical preferences:
anything with balls, basically. Ranging from Mozart to Birthday Party,
Jam to Korn, Doors, Patti Smith, Captain Beefheart, Zappa, _real_ blues,
the list continues..

Favourite beverages:
Whisky, whiskey and beer: Grolsch, Brand, Guinness and the absolute best
beers of the world from the monastries in Belgium. Budweiser?
Bwahahaha..

Favourite rod:
My budget is somewhat limited, so buying a rod for me is constantly
comparing price to quality. So Sage and T&T are way out of my range...
and I don't really care. My favourite rod in my modest collection is an
Elnetti 7'9" 3 weight, smooth as silk, a joy to fish.

Favourite stream:
Is difficult in the Netherlands. We don't have something like classical
troutstreams over here, so we make do with what we have. We do have some
reservoirs here, stocked with rainbows which grow fast & strong. I fish
there regularly, but somehow it doesn't really 'count', if you
understand what I mean. The aquarium idea still gets to me.
For rudd, roach and pike: the polders in the west of Netherlands. Clear
shallow waters and spooky fish.
For trout and grayling: I can only compare rivers I actually fished on
holidays and trips. From that smallish number, the rivers in Wales come
out on top. Wild fish, big grayling, not or hardly ever stocked. I did't
even mind being skunked there for a day (well,.. not really) because
that possibility is just one of the essences of that kind of stream.
Another fond memory is a tiny stream in Limerick, Ireland, called the
Dee. Ranging in depth from ankle deep to over three meters, may be 3 to
8 meters in depth and populated by pure wild brownies, seatrout and
salmon in the season. I could live with something like that in my
backyard, I guess..

Vices:
Can't seem to stop smoking, and enjoy the occasional herbal refreshment.

From the low countries,
take care, Herman

Hate to disagree, but I'm less tall now than 30 or so years ago. I'm a shade

Children: Ed, now 28 living in Denver making me jealous as he fishes the
Front Range.

Hobbies and Interests, Fly Fishing, Rod Building, Computer Programming.

Favorite beverages: Any unique Beer that I haven't tried before. I can
only handle one at a time.

Favorite rod: An 8' 4 wt I built from scrap graphite I bought for 10
bucks at a shop in Boulder just under the Front Range. In fact I think
the name of the shop was the Front Range Anglers.

Favorite stream: No real favorite stream. I just love to get out and can
be just as happy with a good bed of Bluegill as the Madison in Montana.
Mostly, I moved here from Long Beach, CA and haven't had a chance to get
out. Now that I'm finally settled. I hope to find a favorite stream.

Name: Bob Skinner
Age: 53
Ht./Wt: 6' 3" 215 lbs.
Home: Buffalo, WY

Occupation: Retired to Buffalo after 30 years in the cattle business in
south central Nebraska. I quit college after 2 1/2 years to go back and
help my dad with our family's 10,000 head capacity feedlot as his
health was poor. I later had a ranch with 1,000+ mother cows and ran
yearlings on summer grass.

Personal: I've been married to Peggy, the love of my life, for 31
years and we have 2 daughters who live in Lincoln, NE. Kerry, 24,
graduated last year with a degree in psychology and tends bar at the
Macaroni Grill in Lincoln. (That was money well spent:) She's moving
to Denver the end of July. Kristy, 21, is a senior in fashion
merchandising at UNL.

Musical preferences: The Doors, Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, Janis
Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Aretha
Franklin, Melissa Ethridge, Heart, etc. No country, reggae, rap, or
50's bobby sox stuff.

Other Hobbies: I spent years building experimental airplanes. I sold
the last airplane I built, an aluminum, 180 mph, 2 seater in June of
1999 and haven't flown since. I had to quit building because of lung
problems with fiberglass and costs. I decided to devote my time to
spending time with my wife and friends, exploring the west and fly
fishing. I tie a few flies and may take up rod building, maybe even try
bamboo. I'd like to get back into building and flying radio control
gliders.

Favorite beverages: Old Milwaukee and Gilbey's gin & tonic with lime.
I also like fine, hand-made cigars like Arturo Fuente 858 Maduros and
Double Chateau Fuente Maduros. My favorite cigar is Ashton Aged Maduro
but at $178.00 per box, they are way out of my price range:(

Favorite quarry: Trout. I started fly fishing for pan fish and bass in
Nebraska 25 years ago. I taught myself by reading library books as no
one I knew fly fished. After moving to Buffalo, I have tried to
un-learn some bad habits that I developed, an ongoing struggle.

Favorite rod & reel: My Cabela's Three Forks, 7 1/2', 3 weight and St.
Croix Ultra Legend, 8 1/2' 4 piece, 4 weight. My favorite reel is the
Orvis Rocky Mountain cassette reel.

Favorite fishing places: Any lake or stream in the Big Horns. Well, I
like Slough Creek & Soda Butte Creek and the Big Horn, too. Heck, I
like every place I fly fish. Dry fly fishing is my favorite. I enjoy
fishing new places and meeting people who have similar interests.
Hence, the trip to the clave at Ennis.

Hey...if you want to move to NJ we've been looking for an experienced
Oracel DBA for months now. I think the reason why we've had such
problems filling the spot is we're also looking for someone that has a
fair amount of AIX experience.

Good idea, Wayno.

Mark Faulkner: back after a long absence, for work and, more recently,
health reasons. This group, by the way, is remarkable. I have noticed
on several occasions and as recently as today (thanks, Levi) a question as
as to my whereabouts. I have made many friends, both in person and
through the written word, from participating in ROFF and it is an
experience that none of us would have had but for the internet. My thanks
to all.

age: 53 and damn glad of it

occupation: lawyer, but business stuff (not the glamour practice like
Wayno)

children: two daughters, age 23 and gainfully employed, and age 20 in
college.

residence: State College, PA. Central to the best trout fishing areas in
the commonwealth.

home waters: Spring Creek (but seeking replacement due to overcrowding)
Otherwise, my "home" is Missoula, Montana, and more specifically the Clark
Fork downstream thereof.

avocation: aside from fishing of all methods and for all available
species, hunting, occasional golf, TU and similar organizations on a local
level.

music: Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli, Travis Tritt, Diane Shuur, most jazz, some
country (mostly older).

favorite rod(s): two winstons - 9' 5 wt and 8' four weight, plus a 5 wt.
7'6" cane I got at Farlows in London eleven years ago. I have an
assortment of others acquired during my 20 year addiction. However, the
Three Forks 3wt I got on John Popp's recommendation is fast becoming my

I was fortunate enough to attend the Spring' 99 Clave in NC and hope to
make the Maine clave in September. Have a great time in Ennis, everyone.

This year I've been using porcupine under fur for winging material, its a

Errata: I've fly fished since I was 12, enthusiast since age 23. Am a farm

the time I was 16 I had probably fished and hunted every foot of the river

of years in Madison, decided that I really didn't like being a student and
since then have worked in a variety of jobs from a furniture sweatshop in

way, chopping 2' off from my Cortland Clear Creek line has made it into a

Hair: Brown
Political Affiliation: Republican
Religious Affiliation: LDS
Residence: Las Vegas, Nevada
Occupation: Showroom Performer/Student at UNLV
Marital Status: Married to Debbie for over 10 years. Wife is also 4'
6" tall.
Children: Jacob Levi Ursenbach age 10, Jared Isaac Ursenbach age 8, and
Joshua Abram Ursenbach age 4 (he will be five in less than a month)
Wife's Occupation: Works graveyard at Walmart.

I was razed in a small town called Kaysville in Utah. We had 5 horses
in a 3/4 acer corral with barn and a garden over half an acer in size.
Our home was built on a road that was nicknamed "Millionaire Lane."
Not because of who lived there when I was a kid but who lived there
during the turn of the century when the home I lived in was built.

I started bait-fishing at the age of 7 and turned to fly-fishing after
my last child was born. As a child fishing was a passion. It still
is. All my boys are getting the fishing bug and my oldest is learning
how to fly-fish.

As a kid, my parents were concerned about my financial future and
decided I would need to be a performer. Therefore, they found the best
local magician and I became a Magician's Apprentice. At the age of 16
I owned my own Magic shop which quickly went under.

I went on a mission for my church to Orange County California and New
Mexico.

I moved to Southern California to break into movies and met legend
performer Billy Barty. We became friends and during a game of golf he
introduced me to Jerry Marron, who was the Little Lollipop Kid in the
Wizard of Oz and Little Oscar Myer. Jerry informed me of an opening in
Las Vegas for a little person and the rest is history. I've worked
here at the Excalibur Hotel/Casino in their large dinner stunt show for
8 years.

My wife also went on her mission to Orange County California. She is
from a small town in Idaho called Firth just south of Idaho Falls.

We hope to move out of the desert to a very small city up north after I
get out of school. We are looking for a town under 3000 in Idaho,
Utah, Oregon, Wyoming, or Montana. I love riding horses so we need to
enough land my horses and a garden.

I enjoy writing, though I can't spell worth a darn, and I would like to
write children's books. I will need a good editor. Even though my
spelling is horrible, I've has some poetry and short stories already
published. So, that's a good start. I plan on working harder with my
writing after I get out of school.

A new roffian, if I dare to call myself one or even knew what the term
meant:
name: Chris Allen Keeney Fanning
age: 48
height and weight: 5”8” 200lbs. (I lie about my weight, but never about the
fish I catch & release :)

residence: Vancouver, Washington (Portland Oregon Area)

occupation: Clinical, Forensic & Organizational Psychologist totally burned
out just
recently and now unemployed (oh, goodie more time for fishing, if only I
didn’t feel so
damn guilty about it...).

marital status: married, 25 years (same woman), 2 children (Girls
20 & 23) grown and gone: both educated and employed and working hard on my
wife’s

hobbies and interests, apart from flyfishing: Horse Back Trail Riding
(works well for
remote stream fly fishing), Blues Musician (I’m the Bass Player)

musical preferences: Blues and Jazz

favorite beverages: Iced Tea (No kidding, alway a big jar in the fridge)

favorite rod: Redington 3/4 7’ 6” with a DT floating line (I fish mostly
tiny streams,
besides it is a present from my oldest daughter) Otherwise a rod I build
myself 10 years
ago. It casts like crap, but damn it; I built it with my own two hands...

favorite stream: Rock Creek, Gifford Pinchot National Forest -- Non Stocked
cutthroat
fishery -- lots of wonderful hatches including a dynamite termite swarm...

why I fly fish: Because my grandpa did. Anything he did was cool and he
loved stalking
the brown trout in Eastern Oregon. When I fly fish, I can feel him with me,
and that is a
wonderful thing!

at this new job a total of 1 month now and I've amassed the outrageous
sum of 4.6 hours of vacation. Definate advantage to the Air Force, 2.5
days of holiday earned a month and you could conceivabley save up 90

I will hopefully be able to take time out for the NC clave in

Very interesting and informative thread....explains a lot of things<g>

Ancient History:

Greeted the world in 1945 on the fields of Kansas. Spent 19 years there,
joining the U.S. Navy in 1963. My Navy Career ended when I retired in 1983
as a Master Chief Electronics Technican (E-9). During that period I lived In
California, Conn, Virginia and South Carolina, moving to South Carolina in
1967, we loved it and never left. My Navy time was spent entirely in the
submarine service (Nothing like the John Wayne movies).

During my navy time I fished very, very little. My intro to fly fishing came
from my father who took me to the hills of MO. once a year starting at about
age six.

Not so ancient history:

Following my Navy retirement, I spent six years working for Scientific
Atlanta as a field engineer for unique submarine sonar systems. Loss of the
Navy contract ended that gravy train and I have been working for a small
government contractor since.

I started fishing again about six years ago, using ultra and micro lite
spinning gear for panfish and bass. I soon learned that fly fishing was the
way to go for that prey and have been exclusivley fly fishing for the the
last five years. I have a 16 foot bass boat and fish 2 to 3 times a
week.(except today, damn trailer had a flat). I try to make a trout
excursion once a year with the last three trips being to the 2000 Clave, the
San Juan and Mont. I tie all my flies, although I am far from good.

Current stats:

Age 55
Phys. 5'5" 165#
Wife of 36 years. Kandy
Heirs to the Bennet Legacy:
Michael, age 31
Brian, age 28
3 granddaughters and 1 grandson
Favorite water, Goose Creek reservoir
Favorite rod, Cabelas 3wt
Music, country
Other addictions: Ham Radio, cigarettes, favorite drink is sweet tea, had a
problem with other liquids and gave them up five years ago (one of the
smartest things I ever did)

Live has been great and gets better every day!!!!!!!

John, have you ever fished back up by the old Spanish coquina fort a mile or so
back up from the inlet? I was doing the tourist thing one day and I saw what I
believe to be a huge school of redfish heading upriver. I never was able to plan
a trip there for them but it's always been something I wanted to try.

BTW, David from G'ville sez that kayaking within the Canaveral boundaries is
really good fishing.

Hmm...."radiological" must have given it away....

Amchitka is doing pretty well. Since the Navy pulled off of the island in the
early '90s (they had a radar station there), the only visitors have been the
occasional USFWS researcher. It does seem to be recovering quite well
(although slowly) from all of the human disturbances caused by 30 years of
military use. When I was there a few years ago the Dollies were pretty fat and
unwary. Lots of fun fishing for them, although it did tend to get a bit too
breezy for fly casting.

When I moved to Denver the results of our assessment work had not yet been
completed, and I have kind of lost touch with the technical end of things.

Were you involved in one of the tests, or were you a casual visitor?

We flew to Adak on Reeve and then to Amchitka on a small twin turboprop. I
didn't get to see too much of Adak, though, as it was mostly cloud-covered (as
usual). Adak is pretty much shut down, but fortunately the VFW hall was still
open (and serving) when we returned from a dry stint on Amchitka.

Spinning gear probably would have been the better way to go because of the
wind, but I did just fine with my fly rig. Unfortunately, I was there in early
June, far too early for the pink salmon runs.

Hi I'm Jeff from Raleigh. I'm 5' 9, 160, cute blue eyes. I'm a secret agent,
underwear model, and super genius. I like parties and long walks on the beach.
I'm looking for a girl who likes to have fun. Send me a pic and... umm....
OOOPS!

Sorry, wrong window. That's what you get for "doing" ROFF and Online Romance
chat room at the same time. Here's the ROFF version:
Jeff Connelly
5' 9, 160 (that was true)
38, never married, 13 children (kidding)
My girlfriend Benee and I are moving in together next month and we'll be living
in sin until (hopefully) we get married. She appears to be "the one" (who will
tolerate me.) When we go to the Maine clave it will have been 2 weeks living
together, so if I come knocking on your door and ask to sleep in your cabin
please have a heart and realize I'm having a hard time adjusting to
non-bachelor life :-)
Grew up Rochester, NY, came to Raleigh, NC for grad school at NC State and
never left.

My main problem seems to be I have too many interests and not enough time for
them. My main love is soccer (by the way, your team kicks ankle Herman) Have
been desparately trying to maintain a high enough fitness level to play at the
highest level I can (a semi-semi-pro team I helped form 6 years ago.) Both
weekend days have been taken up in the spring and fall, putting a damper on the
fly fishing :-( But I finally quit that team this spring due to back problems
and just plain being too old, so now I only play on Saturdays. Sundays are
free for Sunday/Monday trips, hence my looking around the net for info, hence
finding this motley cr.... ur, I mean fine group of gentlemen, hence attending
the NC clave, then the Ennis clave, then the Maine clave, making this one of
the best fly fishing years in, well, years.

Love music, Grieg to Coltrane to "cocktail" to Neil Young straight on through
to Rage Against the Machine and White Zombie (with minor detours around some
rap and "AM" country). Especially audiophile recordings, including old and new
vinyl (drop a line and compare notes!) Tinkering with my stereo. Light
drinker, German and Canadian beer, and yes, Bud. Learning a lot about wine.
Tequila snob though. If it makes you sick, it's probably because you're
drinking Pepe Lopez or Cuervo Gold or some crap like that.

I write software, object-oriented, currently C++. Our small group does part of
a supermarket self-checkout system (scan, bag and pay with no cashier). The
hardware is NCR, currently in pilot in Food Lion, Safeway, Albertsons, Walmart,
and soon-to-be KMart. I think in 5 years or so this will be as common as gas
station pay-at-the pump.

Oh yeah, favorite rod: LL Bean Guide 7.5' 4 wt (was told this is a GL3 blank)
Favorite stream: anywhere I can catch a decent size wild or holdover trout.
Oatka and W. Ausable NY, working on Wilson NC, and hoping to add Madison and
Rapid soon :-)

Favorite Fish: Tossup between Rainbow and Brown.

Favorite Rod: Sage 960 SP w/ Ross G2

Favorite Fishing Place: tossup between the Clark Fork in Montana and the
upper Gros Ventre in Wyoming for my absolute favorite. Too many others to
mention for 'high on the list'.

Personal: Married to Cindy for 15 years; 3 sons, Daniel-9, and Joshua and
Joseph, twins turning 7 on Aug 2 and 3.

Education: B.S. in Forest Resources Management w/ minor in Chemistry from
University of Montana.

Occupation: Fly Fishing/Hunting Outfitter and AutoCAD Technician

Growing up in a civil engineering/land surveying family (5 kids) who also
happened to live on a farm complete with cattle, horses, chickens, dogs, and
cats (no pigs-Dad hates pigs), I assumed I would follow in my father's
footsteps and become a PE/PLS. After graduating early from high school, I
began college at Georgia Tech (Dad is a Yellowjacket as well as my Marine
Corps fighter pilot brother). After 4 quarters, I realized I wanted to work
in a field which would allow me to be outdoors. I transferred to UM in their
forestry program. We all grew up hunting and fishing. I was the one who took
to it right off (although my younger brother Marcus is still hunting and
fishing when he's not landing a Hornet on an aircraft carrier). My mother's
father was a hunter, fisher, trapper, and taxidermist in northern Minnesota.
He influenced and taught me alot. But I was the only one who took to fly
fishing. Just picked it up one day at about 14. By the time I was 18, I was
leaving on Friday evenings to go to the hills and fish a stream or hunt big
game while everybody else was going to Football or Basketball game (hence my
utter lack of knowledge on those two subjects). After graduating, I took a
position with Georgia-Pacific Corporation as a chemist in their main
Research and Development lab in Decatur, Georgia (a suburb of Atlanta). Talk
about as far from 'working outdoors' as you can get. Did that for two and a
half years, got married during that time, and about drove my wife crazy
living in the big city (she grew up on a ranch in northcentral montana, out
on the prairie). That's when I made the big plunge and decided to go ahead
and start a guide business. I'd always wanted to so we did it. Since 1986,
I've been guiding fly fishers. I also put in 11 years of big game guiding in
both Montana and Wyoming (I was the head guide for 10 years at the Darwin
Ranch out of Jackson, WY). Today, after 14 years, my business has evolved
from a big service (up to 12 guides in 1993) into a small service (2 or 3
guides when needed) with a steady group of 'regulars'. I also have
curtailed my big game guiding mainly for my family. It was hard being gone
to Wyoming for 8 weeks, come home and kiss the wife, pat the kids on the
head, and then turn around and guide Montana's season for 5 or 6 weeks. And
all of that after a busy season guiding the rivers 7 days a week. About 3
years ago, I also starting messing around with AutoCAD (I'd always used
computers since college days) and began working for my father and a
surveying friend of mine when I wasn't guiding (which is 4 to 6 months a
year). My time is full with all of this and the boys, too. Besides, someone
has to teach those kids how to cast! ;>)

Favorite Book: "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens

I should add that I have a new pup, an Alaskan Husky. She is my new
fishing companion. She's almost all white, very light blue eyes, and
doesn't have a curly tail like most Huskies. Many people thinks she's
a wolf and I have to inform them that she's not. At times she does
look like a wolf. I'm currently training her to be a bird dog. She's
taking to training well.

Hunting is another thing I enjoy if I can find the time between classes

during some of the most important parts of the school year. However,
about an hour from home I can go duck hunting. As long as I don't have
a lot of homework to do over the weekend, I can go hunting on
Saturdays. Sometimes I can afford to take a week off and go deer
hunting in Northern Nevada or Oregon. However, Nevada has a lottery
for deer tags and I didn't get one this year. I'm thinking about going
to Oregon in late October because they have no lottery. We'll see what
happens.

Nope, just another vernisom. When I was five years old, I was playing
where I should not have. I was playing army with my brothers, cousins,
and neighbors in a deep trenches on the outskirts of town. A portion
of the wall fell and covered me up. I was completely buried.
Neighbors ran for help and one of my brothers removed the dirt from my
face. My father came, pulled me out, and rushed me to the hospital.
My skull was fractured twice and my pituitary gland was damaged. The
rest is history.

I don't see the problem, whatever one loses in height, one gains in
width. Nature's balance at work. (and some of us are more 'balanced'

about the last twelve years have lived in Austin, Texas. I'm basically an
overpaid pizza delivery guy; I work for UPS, wear brown polyester and sweat

weird, I really, really enjoy practicing scales and arpeggios and playing

My instrument of choice these days is the Ukulele.

Reeve Alutian Airline! Ah, you bring back memories. The first time we landed
on Adak I was looking out the window *down* the runway -- we were "crabbing"
that badly! When the wheels touched, the plane jerked harshly, causing more
than a few people to become "vocal". When I left Adak with my family (after
two years on the rock), we were flying but a short time when my friend's son
saw the right outboard engine on fire. He told Rusty, his dad, who gently told
the flight attendant. When she bent down to look, she screamed, "Oh, my god,
the engine is on fire!" We landed somewhere on one of the islands before the
peninsula. The pilots got off and with two or three folks on ground, walked
around the offending engine. First one way, then the other. The pilots then
came back aboard, started all four turbo-props, and away we went. We landed
safely in Anchorage.

I remember catching a strange fish out of the lake in the north part of Adak.
When you fillet the fish, the flesh was sky blue. The minute it hit the frying
pan, it turned white. We called it a Japanese Perch, but don't really know
whether that was its correct name. Great eating. So were the dollies.

You've brought back some great memories, Chip. <g>

You mean across the intercoastal where they bumped off all those Hugonauts?
Went to try it once but from the A1A side it is too tough. I did catch a
winter flounder a bit toward the city from the inlet. That puppy gave me the
biggest fight. Hung it on an old 6wt 8' glass rod with a minnow fly. I had
an automatic reel so I burnt my hand on the line. He turned side wise so it
was like the most gadawful bream you ever saw. I had to back up the beach to
land it. It threw the hook when I dropped the rod to try to grab it. Picture
this, I'm on my hands and knees trying to get a good grip on thiss flailing
slick fish, my wife grabbed the rod and was trying to pin it while pummeling
with the reel. A crowd of about 20 people had formed a circle and were
cheering us on. After I got it under control I couldn't get up without
turning it loose which I wasn't going to do. I jusst rooled over on my back
hoding on till the fish was still. A game warden was in the crowd and said
"Thats the biggesst damn flounder he"d ever seen taken on that sstretch of
beach. I have a picture of my wife holding it up with a yard stick both of
equal length. My mother in law baked it with lemon juice, butter, baby
onions, and garlic cloves. We ate hardy. Well worth the effort. We ate
hardy. The truth so help me clouser.

Wayne's original message never showed up on our server, so I'll tack
mine onto this one, if you don't mind, Dave.

Kevin Vang

Born in Fargo, North Dakota, currently live in Minot, ND (after
stops in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Montana, and Utah.)

Born 1962, currently 6' 4", 230 lbs and counting.

Married 1988 to Jen, two girls: Bronwyn (1992) and Madison
(1994), who, you may recall, just caught her first fish this summer.

Professor of mathematics at Minot State University.

Music: blues, rock, reggae

Beverage: beer, all kinds, especially what I've made myself. Prefer
dark ales, especially Belgian Trappist ales (still working on my clone
of LaTrappe Quadruppel.) Also partial to Meyer's rum and Cuervo
Gold. Would like to be a wine snob, but I don't get paid enough.

Other hobbies: Hunting (mostly birds, occasionally deer), Labrador
retrievers, homebrewing, woodworking, used to do some painting and
hope to start again soon.

My dad got me a fly rod when I was 10, taught me to tie flies when
I was 12, and I've been hard at it ever since. My home waters are
prairie lakes in North Dakota, which offer excellent fishing for pike,
walleye, smallmouth, white bass, assorted panfish, and, believe it
or not, trout. I usually make at least one trip a year out to SW
Montana to fish for trout, usually on the Big Hole, but also all of
the other rivers in the area (you know the ones...), with occasional
expeditions to Minnesota and up into Canada.

Favorite rods: St Croix LU 7'6" 3 wt. for trout, and a Powell 9 ft.
4 pc. 7 wt. for pike. (Of course, I have a few blanks in the closet
which may unseat the current favorites, and I always have my eyes
open.)

Favorite stream: I ain't tellin', at least, not out in public, anyway.

Also drank my first REAL beer in Germany, 1992. Spoiled my taste buds
forever and drove me to learn the secrets of fermentation. Built my
picobrewery in 1995 and am currently living happily ever after.

Favorite music: Almost everything... Classical, Classic Rock (ZEP, Skynyrd,
Allmons, Beatles, Cream, Hendrix, etc... , country (Hanks, Sr. and Jr.),
Baroque, Rainessaince, Bluegrass, Jazz, Blues, almost all else, except rap,
which of course, isn't music anyway.

favorite beverages: Hearty red wines, Zins, Merlots, Cabs; almost any beer
style except megabrewed belch water (Bud, Miller,Coors, etc). Special favs:
Belgian Lambics, Munich pils, Hefeweizen (Paulaner...yummm), Guiness stout.

Children: Ryan, age 18, worth all the work and worry.

Other interests: Still playing basketball despite ever more frequent trips

Chardonnay. Birdwatching. Baseball (Atlanta Braves fan since '66, so I paid
my dues!), travel.

Favorite rod and reel; anything, as long as I'm on the water. My 4 outfits
are all El Cheapo Extrordinaires (Presidente Editions, but not signed).

Favorite water: whats-his-name Creek, Golden Trout Wilderness. Do you know
how far out of the water a golden will jump for a mosquito?

Sorry to rain on your parade Vern, but most deer hunting units in Oregon are
on a draw (lottery) and the deadline for applications was May 15. The
results of the drawing were announced in early July. Besides, deer season is
in early October. There may be some tags available for coastal Blacktail
deer ( if you enjoy hunting in the rain and HEAVY brush). That season does
go into late October.

As a lurker and sometimes sniper I feel obligated to bare a few facts.
Name: BJ Conner, Portland Oregon, Electrical Engineer BSEE Fresno State,
MBA UND. Ht. 6’1” (going down), wt. 215 ( fighting hard to stay there ) age
57 (going up). Married 30 yrs– can’t remember when I wasn’t. I spent 20+
years in construction, building power plants (nuclear & fossil ) mostly in
the Midwest. Moved here and am now building chip plants.

Beer - McMenamins – Nebraska Bitter (draft), Widmer’s- Sweet Betty ( in
bottles) , Wines _most of the local wines and Gallos- Frei Ranch any
thing ( Iused to work there ).

Definitely not a gear whore. Make fly boxes out of Altoid cans and use an
Ugly Stick when going after Silvers, Chinook or steelhead. Use the same
Medalist 1498 I bough in 1963. Otherwise it’s a 9’ 5 or 7 wt. ( built both
on a Lamaglass blanks).
Favorite streams are the one I ‘m going to next – that would be the
Deschutes right now. Umpqua for smallmouth after that. Like to catch trout
but anything will do.
I grew up as a “ fruit tramp “ (they are migrant workers today). We spent
4 or 5 months every year camping out, working (and fishing) in California,
Oregon and Washington. We were always near some kind of fishing and my Dad
always made time and got us there. Fished the Klamath, Russian, Umpqua,
Wenatchee and many more. He got me into fly fishing because “you can catch
more fish that way”. The Kaweah, Kings and Tule were my “home water” . I
hope there still as good as the memories I have of them.

I apologize for getting a little worked up about the tree spiking thing.
Since I have been back here I have tried to look up a couple of the places
that I had fished in late 50s ( wanted to show the kids some great places )
and now there gone!! It’s like the old song about Muhlenberg county only
this time it was a lumber company instead of “Mr Peabodys Coal company”.

Sid Heaton was born short, bald and without much of a vertical leap in
a Seattle hospital on an autumn's eve in 1967. Emerging just after the
vaunted "Summer of Love," he has spent the last 32 years searching for
a suitable epithet to characterize the season of his birth. Discarded
along the way have been such notable losers as "The Fall of
Consciousness," the "Season of Reason," and the "Autumn of Burning
Sensations During Urination." He is currently undergoing treatment for
this fixation and hopes to be on steady meds any day now. Also, he's
still bald.

After a series of childhood traumas that peaked when he wet his
sleeping bag as a seven year old in a tent full of pubescent Girl
Scouts, Mr. Heaton realized that the only way he was really going to
score big with the ladies (or at least not wet his sleeping bag in
their presence) was to become an accomplished flyfisherman. Parents
and community leaders are still unsure as to how exactly Mr. Heaton
developed this dangerous misconception but have at various times
blamed it on declining societal values, the jump-shot of World B.
Free, and, in the words of one local wit, "that racy brassiere section
in the Sears catalog." Mr. Heaton grew up in a deeply conflicted
community.

After failing to protect a one-run lead in the seventh inning of the
American Legion state finals, Mr. Heaton and his "rag-ass left arm"
were drummed out of town and sentenced to a period of educational
exile in the Bay Area. There, he developed an affinity for BMW
motorcycles, PAC-10 basketball, and cheap-ass scotch. He has only
recently managed to cure himself of that final addiction, now
preferring cheap-ass bourbon. Also, he didn't go to class much,
preferring to treat his hangovers with the fiction of Don Delillo and
Martin Amis instead.

While in the Golden State, Mr. Heaton also managed to fish as far
south as the Kern River and as far north as the Klamath River. His
favorite river in that fair state remains the N. Fork of the Yuba,
though on the whole he'd much rather be on the N. Umpqua in Oregon
chasing summer steelhead or on the Sauk in Washington freezing his ass
off after winter steelhead.

After some career meandering that took him from drummer in a mediocre
stoner band to full-time sperm donor, Mr. Heaton finally settled on
his current vocation of itinerant technical writer. For the last four
years, he and his wife have plied their telecommuting trade across
most of the lower 48, three or four Canadian provinces, and large
chunks of Europe, all while working for a large, faceless software
company in Santa Clara. He currently resides in Nevada City,
California, roughly equidistant from the Truckee (where he fished
today) and the N. Fork of the Yuba (where he's fishing tomorrow).

Also, he's definitely seeking help on his bad habit of referring to
himself in the third person ;-).

Thanks to all in roff for the bios --- most informative and
entertaining!

If you want to call the non-resident 'draw' for big game hunting licenses a
lottery, than we do have one. Deadline is March 15. Results out in April or
May. Sorry Vern.

All right it's Monday morning so I'll jump in...

Name: Allen Epps, online Moniker: Pugs

Age; 36 5'8" 195 lbs

Occupations: 10 years as a USN EA-6B Prowler Electronic
Countermeasures Officer, 2100 hours, 400 traps, Desert Shield
Desert Storm, Provide Comfort, Bosnia, Kosovo, Tailhook 91
enough... Still flying as a reserve LCDR with VAQ-209.

Now: Work for a Federally Funded Research and Development Company
doing future computer architecture work supporting that agency
with the alleged black helicopters.

Home: Catonsville, MD just down the street from Joe Bruce's Fly
shop with SWMBO Moira (Red haired, Irish you get the idea). No
kids but hope to have a Lab by December.

Favorite River: Tha Yakima in the canyon, lord I want to go back
to Washington!

Favorite Rod/Reel - A 13 year old 4 piece Sage 5/6 (before they
had ratings?) with a Lamson LP-3. Being carry on sized it's saved
many a trip with delayed baggage.

Other hobbies: flogging an Old Alfa Romeo around the track
occasionally, building mission furniture, rebuilding our 1924 to
what we want.

Quote: The three most dangerous things in the Navy:
An Ensign saying "It's been my experience"

I'll be in Rangely ME the week after the Clave staying at a
friends camp so expect some location and fly questions as that
trip approaches!

Cheers,
Allen

Well, let me finish that quote without my computer spazzing:

The three most dangerous things in the Navy:
An Ensign saying "It's been my experience"
A Lieutenant Commander saying "I've been thinking"
An Aviator saying "Hey watch this"

LOL. Having spent 20 years in the canoe club, there is much truth in what you
say. The last, "Hey watch this" is also the last words uttered by all rednecks
who were killed in their off road trucks.

If you want company to fish the Rapid in September, give me a holler.

Okey dokey, I'm in.

Joe Fleischman

Age: 47

5' 10", 205# (down from 220, hoping for 190)

Home: Bel Air, Maryland

To make the house payments: Marketing director of a precast concrete
manufacturing company (Strescon Industries). Educated as a civil (structural)
engineer.

Education: BCE, Johns Hopkins University; MBA, Loyola College

Marital status: Married

Fishing frequency: see marital status

Children: Two (I trust most of you, but this ng is available to every
pedophile in the world, so that's all I'll say about that.)

FF related interests: Build most of my own rods (poorly, I might add; but I
enjoy it). Tie a few simple flies. Read a lot of books.

Interests other that FFing: Not too damned many. Get damned little free time
as it is. Use most of it to wet a line. Was a maniac sailboat racer at one
time, now have a seldom-used daysailer. Was a semi-professional juggler at one
time, now reduced to ill-practised cameos at children's parties & ROFF claves.
Some camping (pop-up), some canoeing.

Last movie seen: The Perfect Storm

Books: Prefer non-fiction, but last book read was "Hannibal"

Animals: No, we're just friends. The old barn was here when we moved in, so
we got sheep (aka edible pets). Also one llama. Current duck population: 8
(varies with local fox population. Chickens: 0 (fox got the last one). One
dog, one cat.

Music: Almost anything on non-commercial radio. Tend toward folk, blues,
bluegrass, jazz, classical, old country. Hate top 40 shit. Only listen to
country when wife insists.

Alcoholic beverages: Distilled beverage of choice is still Wild Turkey, but
(thanks to ROFF) have begun to develop a taste for single malt (Dalwhinnie).
Brewed beverage of choice: Guinness Stout, but that Sleeman's stuff ain't bad.

Favorite rod: 8'-6" 4 wt. from Mike. Something to aspire to in my own rod
building efforts.

Favorite stream: Got to go with local, the Gunpowder. Had one of the best
trips of my ffing career on Wilson's Creek (NC), however, & the Salmon River
(NY) is a beautiful place when the leaves turn in the fall if you can find an
uncrowded stretch.

That enough?

Herman, just in case there was any misunderstanding, that was my "funny" way of
saying that Netherlands does indeed kick ass and I love watching them play.
They're one of the best teams in the world, and without a doubt the best team
that's never won The Cup.

Aren't you the second guy with juggling in his bio? If you guys will be at the
Ennis clave, I'd love to see a drunken passing demonstration, maybe with raw
eggs? And when you sober up you can teach me a few new tricks... :-)

Jeff

So, what state can I go to for an over the counter a deer tag? Are
there any states like this any more in the west? I was told that there
is, but I don't know.

Name: Willi Loehman

Age: 50

Height and Weight: 5' 11" 155 lb..

Residence: Fort Collins, CO

Occupations: After college, I worked at menial jobs until I saved enough
to travel. When the money ran out, I went back to work and repeated the
cycle. I eventually found a school willing to pay me to go back, got an
MS in Education and taught "troubled" kids for several years. I got
burned out (hardest job I ever had) and moved to the mountains. I tried
a variety of marginally profitable self employment ventures, finally
went into the boarding kennel business about 20 years ago. I bought a
kennel about 15 years ago and have earned a living boarding, training
and showing dogs ever since. I've been good at finding work that I enjoy
and working for myself. Not so good at working for other people or
earning much money.

Marital Status: Legally single, been with my partner/SO for about 25
years

Children: No humans, but I do share my home with a dozen Golden
Retrievers.

Hobbies and Interests: Dog stuff, animal and bird watching, playing
computer adventure games, hiking and other outdoor related activities

Favorite Beverage: That first cup of coffee in the morning, which I'm
now enjoying.

Favorite Music: The Dead, Jazz, Blues, Blue Grass, Folk

Favorite Stream: My home water, no matter where I live. Moving water has
always held magical and elemental properties for me. I get great
satisfaction out of getting to know a stream with its changing moods.

Favorite Rod: A moderately soft 3 weight

Favorite Flies: Each fishing season, this seems to change. This past
year I've been experimenting with lots of emerger patterns. Just
starting to toy around with streamers.

Flaming chain saws, now THAT's wussy stuff. I once juggled two
blondes, a red-head, and a brunette until from sheer (and shear)
exhaustion and near bankruptcy I moved on to safer territory.
