11-15, 16-14, 15-10, 15-12
Time: 2:21

Match 2: #1 UCLA d. #8 Hawai`i 3-2
6-15, 15-13, 15-12, 12-15, 17-15
Time: 3:16

Final Standings:
UCLA 3-0
Hawai`i 2-1
PSU 1-2
IPFW 0-3

All-Tournament Team (based primarily on the first 2 days of play)
IPFW: Hector Soto
PSU: Jose Quinones
UCLA: Mark Williams, Seth Burnham
Hawai`i: Clay Stanley and Kostantinos Theocharidis
MVP: Brandon Taliaferro of UCLA

It's billed as the most prestigious tournament in the country and it
lived up to it. Both matches were fought to the bitter end and worth
every butt-breaking minute. Play started at about 4:42 PM HST and
ended at 11:04 PM HST. For IPFW, it was a rude awakening, but they
should have a much better idea of what they need to do to play for the
national title at home on May 6. For PSU, a brutal preseason pays off
with a win against a higher-ranked opponent loaded with talent. For
UCLA, it shows that they're not invincible and will need to work for
the title. For Hawai`i, it was a dazzling coming of age for a team
loaded with new faces and players in unfamiliar positions. Hawai`i
came tantalizingly close to the biggest upset in the nation and even
served for the match once.

Wow -- sounds exciting. Thanks for all the reports. PSU and IPFW hook up
again next Saturday in Happy Valley, and weather permitting, I'm planning
to go up there for the match.
