Today while installing OSS497c on a client's OSR5.05m w/
RS505A installed, the machine refused to reboot an produced
a 'k-trap -- Unexpected Alignment Fault in System Mode'
message on the console. I've installed this update 15-20
times on all flavors of hardware (BTW this one's an IBM
PC-Server w/ dual pentiums with recent BIOS upgrades for Y2K
from IBM) and have not seen this error. Checked BIOS
parameters and nothing different from other installs. Even
removing the update via the software manager and relinking
the kernel didn't help. I could only get the system to boot
by replacing with an older kernel. Would be grateful for any
comments, suggestions or observations.

Up Front Thanks
John C.

I don't have an answer, but maybe a pointer. Turn on the kernel
debugger.
Change the N to a Y in the file /etc/conf/sdevice.d/scodb, save and
relink/reboot.
The next time the kernel panics you might have a stack trace that will
display
where the kernel went castors up.
To quit out of the debugger once it is envoked, just type q<enter>,
which will
continue to panic, or reboot() and the system will reboot.

It's been a while but the last time I saw an alignment fault it was a
hw raid
controller (non IBM HW). The part that worries me is removing the
supplement
didn't remove the panic, just rebooting with a much older kernel.
good luck, it doesn't sound like a simple fix.

Did the system have Digiboards on it by chance?

I had this with a system with a digi and the sco
article helped. Digi also said it made a difference
if you put the digi mpi software on before or after the
y2k patch for the system. They recommended we install
the y2k patch first and then the digi software.

Thanks for the pointer. There are two main ISA cards, a
Computone Serial
port card and an Alliance CoAx for an AS/400 to UNIX
communications card. Both worked/work like champs before
the install. Any thoughts on removing the hardware drivers
and adding them back after oss497c install?
