"mount /mnt/cdrom" like I always do and I got the error
"Wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom or too many
mounted file systems"
I have no idea what this means beyond the fact that I can't access my
cdrom anymore in Linux. thanks in advance

First, try being explicit:
mount -r /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
If that works, then your /etc/fstab got hosed somehow.
However, that would be unlikely without screwing you up in
other ways.
You can get that error with a music cd in the drive, too..
