Three are sentenced in money laundering

by Bruce Vielmetti

May 7, 1991
St. Petersburg Times

Three former employees of a Clearwater rare coin and bullion store were
sentenced Monday to more than two years in prison for money laundering.

Grant Boshoff, 20, and Lawrence Spencer, 44, each received sentences of
two years and 10 months, to be followed by two years' probation. Boshoff,
a citizen of South Africa, was taken into custody, while Spencer was
allowed to voluntarily surrender at a federal prison that will be
designated later.

Ronald W. Bernstein was sentenced to two-and-a-half years, followed by two
years' probation. He will remain free on bail until he surrenders to begin
his sentence. Though he was the manager of the company, Bernstein was not
as directly involved with the money laundering.

All three men pleaded guilty in January to a single count of money
laundering at their former business, Bernstein, McCaffrey & Lee. Tne
company has been closed since it was raided and the inventory was
confiscated in December 1989.

The business also was found guilty Monday and ordered to pay a $200 fine.
But it is now defunct.

As part of the January plea agreements, the defendants gave up any claim
to bank accounts, equipment and gold coins valued at more than $100,000
that were seized.

The three men and the business were charged with agreeing to sell gold
investment coins to undercover internal Revenue Service agents for
$110,000, after the agents said the money was the proceeds of illegal
gambling operations.

The arrests followed a six-month IRS investigation, in March 1990,
Bernstein, Spencer and Boshoff argued that they had been unfairly targeted
for investigation because they are Scientologists.

Scientologists follow the teachings of science fiction writer L. Ron
Hubbard, and the group has its international spiritual headquarters in
Clearwater. The Church of Scientology and the IRS have had a long-standing
dispute over the tax-exempt status of the church's Flag Service
Organization, the main Scientology group in Clearwater.

I see this was written in 1991.
