To do the test, I used the QuickSave features of the No$GMB emulator. I
fought a Level 37 Slowbro in the Seafoam Islands, got it down to about
one-quarter of it's HP (no status changes), and saved. I then tried
each of the following capture techniques twenty times, restoring the
game after each attempt.
Since there seem to be many conflicting ideas as to when the buttons
should be pushed (as soon as the ball is selected, just as it appears,
while it's in the air, just as it opens/closes, etc.), I tried the ones
that seem to be the most popular. If anyone has a serious issue with
this, I _may_ try more combinations.
Ultra Ball (normal): Threw an Ultra Ball, no additional keypresses.
Great Ball (normal): Threw a Great Ball, no additional keypresses.
Great Ball (A): Threw a Great Ball, and pressed and held the A button
just as the ball closed.
Great Ball (Up+B): Threw a Great Ball, and pressed and held Up+B just as
the ball appeared.
The results were as follows:
Ultra Ball (normal): 14 out of 20 attempts were successful
Great Ball (normal): 11 out of 20 attempts were successful
Great Ball (A): 12 out of 20 attempts were successful
Great Ball (Up+B): 11 out of 20 attempts were successful
Conclusion: The tricks used above are fake. There was no increase in
the capture rate of any significance. The one extra successful attempt
for the 'A' trick easily falls within an expected margin of error. It
is possible that I should have done more trials to further decrease this
margin (the 'A' trick had a success rate of 8 out of 11 at one point).
Of course, this doesn't mean that I still won't try these techniques on
occasion. After all, it can't hurt... :)
However, I have discovered a trick that will always work! If you throw
a Master Ball, then quickly press and release Left+Down+A just as the
ball appears, and then press and hold Up+Down+Left+Right+A+B and place
your left thumb on the bottom-right corner of the Gameboy screen just as
the ball closes while simultaneously dancing the Macarena, you will
capture the target every time! :)
Has anyone ever wondered if there's some evil guy sitting in his dark
basement and coming up with hundreds of fake tricks like this, leaking
them to various places, and then laughing and laughing over how many
people fall for them?

If I recall though the time that you press the button is difrent. Press
just as the little explosion from the ball closing apears rather then
just as the ball is thrown. Though I might be mistaken.
Actually, I think there are so many ridiculous
rumors about PM (Yoshi, Pokegods, Luigi, Pikablu,
etc) that there has to be somebody intentionally
starting them. Whoever this troll is, (s)he's
been twice as annoying as R C*ph*r.
