Hello all!

I have an SCO 5.0.5 system with a networked printer attached via HP
JetDirect box using standard HP tools included with SCO. Now I want to use
VisionFS to allow networked PC's to print to this printer. When I go into
the VisionFS admin, I can set up the printer as a share. The PC's can set
up the printer as a networked printer, browse the available connections, see
the SCO networked printer and configure it. However, it always says that
the printer is "off-line", thereby excluding it from use by the PC's.

Any ideas how I can fix this? What I might be doing wrong?

TIA

Mark,

Does the printer have a mixed case name according to lpstat -v? This may
be the cause of the problem. See profedit.hlp -> Troubleshooting ->
General Problems -> Printing.

If the printer isn't mixed case can you post output from the command
'lpstat -v'.

Thanks for the info. The printer name is indeed Laser2 (Upper and lower).
However Laser2 is referenced in several places in our Unix applications
control files. Is there a way to create an "laser2" alias that really is
going to "Laser2"?

There is, so here goes:

1. Start the Profile Editor

2. Select the Master Printer share and uncheck both Active and
Browsable. This is to prevent the auto-generate but permanently offline
'Laser2' from appearing.

3. Select New Shared Printer
- First change the Share name to an appropriate lower case name e.g.
'laser2'
- Then select 'Laser2' from the Printer Name drop down list
- Finally check both Active and Browsable

4. Apply the changes and restart the server. PC's can now install and
use a printer that maps to Laser2, without modification of the UNIX
queue itself.

NOTE: Any other printers that you wish to share through VisionFS will
need to be added as 'New Shared Printers' as the auto sharing mechanism
that VisionFS otherwise uses is not displaying or activating these
shares.

You could create a printer class laser2 and add Laser2 to it then add
the printer to visionfs via profedit.
