There are however some draw back's. You can't have anything to do with

You paid a lot there :)

I can't se anything wrong with it, okay tere site's not exactly
extensive at the moment and they use a <form action="mailto: thing,
but who knows, Geocities isn't exactly great (500 adverts on every
click) and I signed up for xoom and couldn't log in! It wont be the
worst.

Can some one enlighten the rest of us on why any one would provide free
space?

Most companies that give you free space make money of advertising on your
site. This is why geocities, tripod, and all the others have either windows
popping up or banners at the bottom of your screen.

If you are looking for a free, but still reliable web site with no
advertising on it your best bet is to find a local ISP. Most will give you
free web space with a dialup account, and if they don't, they will soon if
they want to stay a competitive ISP.

What dont you understand? We make NO money what-so-ever...we are doing this
to learn about how it all works, etc...we know what we're doing, we just
want to get into this stuff...we make NO money what so ever and
advertisements on our client's sites are optional.

I admit, our systems arent the fastest, but I have someone from DENMARK
(5000 miles away from the server) who uploaded a 1.5MB file in less than 10
minutes.

True :-)
and I have never had such great service from any of the servers I have
connected to before. Not even from my local ISP. Service and real
people is what counts. Now I do not have to ask my question which was
how and why. No banners, no pop up screens, nothing annoying. And help
is there all the time. I like it.

I just uploaded my personal site to DarkWing this morning, as a mirror site.
My pages do load much slower there. I though perhaps that was just
temporary conditions on the web this morning, but I just now linked to a
page I hadn't loaded yet (not in cache), and it took an abnormally long time
to load even though most of the images are already loaded from previous page
(I am connected at 45333 right now).

I guess I'll hang around there for awhile, cause it does give me some
options to play with that I don't have on my other sites (CGI bin and
subdirectories). They are already "offering" a promotional banner for your
site, and I fully expect that this will become a requirement at some point,
to generate income. My hope is that they will grandfather in the existing
sites.

We are upgrading our systems on Sunday (CPUs and RAM) so it should help a
bit.
And no, at NO TIME will the advertisements be required...they are just out
there in case you want to advertise us (Arne was more than willing :-))

I think a bit of some peoples problems is the ISPs...(ours included).

We will be switching backbones within a few weeks, which should help
connections, but I have people that comment on our sites loading
quickly...so, it all depends on a number of things.

Well, the download speed is somewhat better tonight, but still slow. I ran
an unscientific experiment to compare the load time on the same page at my
DarkWing site, my Geocities site and my MCI site. Clearing the cache in
between, the same pages load about 50% faster at the MCI site, and about 30%
faster at Geocities (the Geocities page also has to load their banner and
branding script). 50% is no big deal if all you have is text, but my main
page, music version, is pushing my personal limit on load time already, and
the extra time is a problem. It could just be a bad line somewhere between
here and your site, but more likely somewhere past my web connection to MCI
Internet I suppose it does make sense that with my internet connection
being through MCI, my page there would load faster for me, and maybe the
line to Geocities is just clearer. Keep up the good work. I can stand a
few problems if they are being actively worked on, and it's hard to beat the
price.

We're using the best systems etc that we can .... :P And with this being
free, it's hard to have the best overall...but we are working on it!
