Ya that game rocked, I probably sent as much time playing DC as Marathon
(mind you thats alot of time), but it also depends on what you call "Best"
- try as you may to define it but you can't (or really hard).

MechWarrior 2. I still play that as much as anything, and I never get
tired of it.

Myth is a close 2nd.

it has been, many times.
besides that, with the great diversity of games, how can you compare them
all equally? its like trying to decide which is the best automobile
--including cars, trucks, tractor-trailers, and anything else with wheels.

besides, we all know myth is the best ;)

Hmmm...I'd have to go with Bombs, Tetris, Doom(s), Descent 2 or Quake.

I can't pick an absolute best very easily, but someone has
to mention ProPinball: Timeshock. It's definitely among
the best.

Avara, Escape Velocity, Glider Pro, and SpaceWard Ho!...in alphabetical
order since I can't rank those among themselves.

(so they're not 3Dfx graphics...it's the gameplay that counts).

I'd have to go with the original Marathon. Basically, tho, Bungie has made
some really kick-ass games. I suppose i would appreciate Marathon 2/inf
and Myth better if I did net games, but because I have a really slow modem
(33.6 Express Modem), it isn't a good option.

There were a couple of reasons I really loved Marathon. One was the
atmosphere. I enjoyed movies like Alien and Event Horizon (they are the
only ones off of the top of my head) because of thier dark futuristic
themes. I can remember the first time I played with the demo I was
freaking out because I couldn't really see where the enemies were coming
from, but my motion sensor told me they were everywhere...(on a side note,
I also had a great time playing with the original demo‹not the 4L‹and
sniping the Bobs with my magnum on "Blaspheme Quarantine". I guess you
could say I was natually inclined to take part in the great Marathon
tradition of slaying every bob as is possible)

Another reason was because of the modular design. I got my hands on a copy
of Phforte a.s.a.p and started putting together maps of my own‹frequently
maxing out the limits for polys and units. I also had a lot of fun with
the physics model, making such weapons as a napalm bomb, fusion rifle,
anti-matter gun, and even a crude "wave motion cannon". Fiddling with some
of the gravitational or acceleration constants is a riot, as well.

One of the biggest reasons I really enjoyed marathon would have to be
because of its underlying story. I still have yet to come to a full
understanding of what occured in the marathon universe, and why. I found
it absolutely amazing that Bungie could pull off such a complex storyline,
tying in elements from Pathways into Darkness, and spanning hundreds of
years. Myth may even contain some elements found in marathon's terms.

Overall, I have to give Marathon my vote for 'Best Game Ever Played'. I
still get around to beating it again every once in a while (on Total
Carnage, of course), and still search through terms looking for answers.

That's the best part, and the reason why I consider it one of the best. On
MGL, for the All Time Favorite vote, I tend to alternate between Marathon I
and TIE Fighter. I also think the artwork on Marathon I was better than in
the sequels, though that's certainly a matter of opinion.

TIE Fighter combines a story with dogfighting and the Star Wars universe.
What more can one ask for? Well, multiplayer would be nice, but only with
multiple modern Macs at home...

Actually Marathon 2 was released for Windows 95 also. I don't think it did
very well...

If we're going by the sheer amount of time I've spent playing the game,
then the hands down winner is Sid Myer's Civilisation. I must have
played that game for 1000 hours while I was in grad school, and it was
the main reason it took me five years to finish! Grad school, not the
game.

Going by my pre-sales excitement level translated to my post-buying
satistfaction level, I'd have to say X-Wing. But I'm a major Star Wars
nut.

Interestingly enough, I once figured out that it took me about 1000 hours
of training to reach the rank of shodan (1st degree black belt) in
Shotokan Karate. What that says or means, I have no idea. :)

Maybe if I hadn't burned about 1000 hours playing Angband and Quake, I'd
be 2nd degree now!

Ah well. :)

Wolfenstein 3D was the first Mac game I ever played. I still love every minute
of it. I enjoy playing the third party maps.
It ran great on my 040 processor Mac and it runs excellent on my PowerPC.

I'm glad you like it. I had an unreal deadline to finish it since
MacPlay wanted to send a copy to the set of "The Net" with Sandra
Bullock. It gave me no end of laughter when she was "removing a virus"
from the game before shipping it.

Hadn't they heard of recompiling? :)

If you talking about most time spent (wasted) on a Mac it would have to the
following:

Tetris (with music)
Fool's Errand
Marathon (the music missing from the subsequent Marathons made this one the
best)
Quake
Duke Nukem 3D

Honorable mentions:

Arkanoid
Breech
Crystal Crazy (I think that's the name)
Dark Castle
Hornet (all of them)
Prince of Persia
Shufflepuck Cafe
Strategic Conquest
Shanghai II
Test Drive (the original)
