Sometime ago, before I lost my access to the newsgroup, several people
were interested in info on "Schraege Musik". While I was off-line, I
found information on it in a German book I have on the WWII Air War.
Any interest still?

Heck yeah, Tell us all about it!! Pull up a chair, have a beer. As a fan of the
Fw-190 and other german aircraft, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks for the invite. I'll take a Spatenbraeu. As to the info:
Source is a book titled LUFTKRIEG 1939-1945, by Janusz Piekalkiewcz,
published by Suedwest Verlag Muenchen, 1978.
Pages 302 and 303 describe the Jazz Music and have a detailed figure
showing the weapon installation, as well as a description of a typical
attack from the rear, low, and through the blind spot to avoid onboard
defensive weapons. The device is attributed to the efforts of a
machinist from Berlin, Ordnance Sgt Paul Mahle. Description of the
weapon is a 2cm twin cannon, with an upward firing inclination of 70-80
degrees, mounted in the fuselage behind the cockpit of twin-engine night
fighters. The "textbook" approach called for "Attack from below and to
the rear. The fighter directs his cannon, in a gentle climb, into the
bomber fuselage. Gunners and bomber magazine are especially
endangered." On his first mission with the device, Lt P Ehardt of the
6th Squadron, NJG 5 shot down four bombers in 29 minutes as they
attacked Peenemuende on 17/18 August 1943. And Capt M Meurer reported
that the 2nd Squadron/NJG 5 had 18 kills with no losses or damages to
their own machines. Sgt Mahle received a letter of commendation and
500RM for his idea.

"Schraege Musik" is the name of a weapon installation of the Dornier Do
217N-2/R22 and other types of Nighthunter´s.
In the Do 217N-2/R22 are four 20mm MG151 MK´s installed behind the main
fueltank in a angle of 70° upward.
In the He 219 "Schraege Musik" was built in with two MK108 30mm each with
100 rounds of ammo.

Research is running 1942 with an Me110 an an Do 17Z. General Kammhuber are
interested on that weapon for Nighthunter´s and let upgrade three Do 217J-1
and after success in winter 42/43 three more.
From 1943 on "Schraege Musik" was an upgrade set for Do 217J and Ju 88C.
