Wanted - backgammon board

Hi,

I am looking for a backgammon board for a Christmas present. Need a new or
like new felt or fabric board (no wood boards) in a carrying case style.
What he wants is one in which the chips fit snugly when lined up side by
side. Any suggestions?

Sorry Bev, this doesn't answer your query at all, but I just wanted to add
my voice.

When I look at a new board, the first thing I do is check to see if 6
checkers will fit snugly onto the 6 points in a quarter. I hate it when
there's too much space and they rattle around. Most boards however seem to
have this (as I see it) defect. Why is that?

One thing people buying/selling/making BG boards should keep in mind is
checker size. In the US, tournament players prefer 1 3/4 in = 1.75 in (= 4.4
cm)
checkers. Only occasionally are larger or smaller sets seen at tournaments.
The reason presumably is that this size is a compromise between the ergonomics

of play (large pieces are easier to see and feel better moving around) and the

restrictions of travel (sets larger than the above are too cumbersome to lug
around).

Carol Cole stocks most books and equipment (including boards) and if she
doesn't have what you're looking for, she is so well connected to the BG
world that there's a good chance she can point you in the right direction.

Thanks, Chuck. While my husband (Dick) and I are avid players, we are by no
means tournament quality - recreation only. We have also heard that Penneys,
of all places carries a good felt board for around $45.
