I learned a variation of normal backgammon rules and acey ducy when I was
at college.

My friends and I still play it 15 years later it is only way we play.

The game was called Mexican.

The basic rule were.

no more than 5 men on a row.

doubles roll again.

you have to move your low roll first,

you must take off exact, but you can move in the back court.

you must complete the roll if possible.

1 and 2 is called mexican. you get the one and the two
and any doubles you wish. (you must complete the roll to get the
doubles.)

Has anyone heard of this variation ?

I have played this version, about two months ago. A friend here thought
that he was playing it the "correct" way and that "my" way (i.e.
standard backgammon rules a la FIBS) was wrong, and "not as
interesting". We tried one game my way (which I won quite easily, he
having not played that way before) and one his way, which he won, as I
needed two 2's for about 10 rolls in sucession, which I didn't get.
Indeed, I started bearing of when he still had a man on the bar, and
still lost (and no blots were hit). IU wasn't very impressed.... :-)

"His" rules didn't involve the 2-1 "mexican" though.

Well, there are lots of variations on the "standard" bg rules, some better known
than others.

Your rules look a bit like a variety popular here in Holland and Belgium, called
"Tric-Trac". Don't know the exact rules for this, but it shares the "1 2 is a
special roll"-concept. You start with all men on the bar or the 1 and/or two
point, I'm not sure.
