How did you change the mode of the parallel ports?
I have a site with a bunch of oki's that I took off of a digiboard on
their old server, and moved onto hp500x's, using netcat and the 91xx
ports, so that both their new server and their old server could use
them. (I had originally set it up so the new server prints through the
old server but of course that is no long term solution and I conviced
them to switch to print servers rather than buy a new digiboard for
the new server)
Ever since then, much to my chagrin, the lasers work fine, but all the
oki's exhibit what looks like flow control and buffer overflow
problems.
Supporting anecdotal evidence: I see the same thing all the time when
shareing an oki from a windows pc and printing to it from unix through
facetwin. In that case, putting the lpt port to spp in the pc's bios
always fixes it.
I configured these right from scratch using nothing but arp and telnet
and a list of MAC addresses. Telnetting to the units I don't see any
options about the mode of the parallel ports. Do I have to go on site
and use some windows utility? If I could run netscape on the server
via vnc or X would that be good enough?

I've had problems with the 320 Oki's dropping charcters in parallel
mode no matter if they were on the system or on print servers.
And ONLY the 320 series.

How To:
Configure the HP Jet Direct Devices to the 300 series Turbo Printers.
The following steps are necessary for configuring Hewlett-Packard Jet
Direct EX (external) devices.
This document will apply to HP Jet Direct device models EX, EX+,EX+3,and
EX+3/100VG. The HP Jet Direct
devices come with software to setup the parallel port. This document
applies to software version 2.33. Other
versions will have the same settings to change, but may have different
menus to get to those settings.
Additional questions should be referred to HP.
The HP Jet Direct software should be configured for "Interview Mode."
Action:
1. Connect the Okidata printer to the Jet Direct External Device using a
1284 - IEEE compliant bi-directional cable.
2. Power on the printer and the HP Jet Direct device.
3. If you have not previously configured the Jet Direct device, look at
the bottom of the Jet Direct device for a label
containing the product's address (08000 ...,006...).
4. Run the HP Jet Admin Software configuration tool.
5. If you have already configured the Jet Direct device you should see
it listed on the main screen within Jet Admin.
(if you do not see it then go to "Device" then "New" and select it from
the list. Follow the steps listed until you reach
the "Optional" screen. Proceed to step #8).
6. Using the right mouse button, click on the printer and scroll down
to modify.
7. Now click on "Next" until you reach the "Optional" tab.
8. Click the down arrow beside "Parallel Mode: Speed of Connection" and
select "Centronics".
9. Next, click the down arrow beside the "Parallel Handshaking:
Communication Protocol" option.
Select "nACK and Busy".
10. Click "finish". Shortly after, a box will appear indicating that the
configuration is saved.
11. You must now power-cycle (power off/on) the printer for these new
changes to take effect.
NOTE: This setup should work with the factory default settings of the
Okidata ML320/1 Turbo,
ML390/391 Turbo printers.

The above paragraphs are the important parts. The OKI 320/390 series
parallel port does not work with EPP and ECP parallel ports. It
requires an old and slow "Centronics" port to function. Most of the
current print servers default to the fastest mode (ECP) and must
therefore be slowed down. It doesn't matter what printing protocol is
being used (HPNP, 9100, netcat, LPR/LPD, Netbios, etc), the print
server has to be slowed down to match the printer.
Been there... Done that... works fine.
