======================
Day 26:
There comes a time in a young Amazon's life when she realizes that if
she is to overcome the challenges that lie ahead of her, she must invest
a serious portion of her days in training. At least, that's the
conclusion Kitsilan reached as she studied her average damage output
over coffee this morning.
"You could just get a better bow," Kyle offered.
"As if," Kits replied, "They're not exactly falling like mana pots."
"True, but you've an Ort and an Eth rune in your stash, and in a
two-socket bow, they transform into an awesome weapon."
"Awesome?"
"Comparatively speaking, of course."
"Ah, but I don't have a two-socket bow."
"There's that. How about if you socket that Snowy Leech bow you got off
Larzuk yesterday? If you can get two sockets in it, you could glue in
your Ral and your perfect Topaz."
Kitslilan thought about that for all of two seconds. "Good idea!" She
trotted over to the smithy and handed her Snowy Short War Bow of
Leeching to Larzuk. "Can you set two sockets in this?"
"Why, for you, Kitsilan, sure! There's plenty of room."
With the addition of the Ral and the Topaz gem, Kitsilan's bow's stats
were:
two-hand damage: 6 - 14
fast attack speed
adds 5-30 fire damage
adds 1-40 lightning damage
adds 9-30 cold damage
5% life stolen per hit
"Well, that's more like it," Kyle said, admiring the twinkle of the
Topaz. "Let's see what it will do. Foothills?"
They took the waypoint to the Frigid Highlands and found Eldritch and
his gang in their usual hangout. Making very quick work of them, the two
heroes sped back over the bridge and proceeded to blow up Shenk and his
minions, then worked their way back to the town gate. Along the way
Kitsilan levelled to 33, and after consulting with Malah about the
possibilities, read up on how to Evade.
"Dicey," Kyle muttered.
"What do you mean?"
"If you check the fine print, there's a potential for getting locked up
while you're Evading."
"Can't be helped. Malah says that if I ever want to be able to, what was
it, oh-- 'summon a powerful ally', then I have to learn Evade first."
"Summon a what? What am I, then?"
"Expensive to resurrect."
"Oh. Well, okay."
Back in town, they took a short nap to refresh themselves. Kitsilan
visited Malah once again to fill up her scroll books. The old healer had
a suggestion for them. "If you really want to train fast," she said,
"you should use the 'players 4' chant. Might see better loot, too."
"Players 4?" Kitsilan repeated incredulously.
"No, no-- 'players 4'. Without the question mark. You run along now."
Back by the stash, Kitsilan looked around. Kyle was restringing her bow.
No one else was nearby. "Players 4," she announced.
"What?" Kyle said, looking up.
"Nothing, just a chant Malah said would make the monsters stronger."
Kyle stared. "And you wanted to do this why?"
"For experience. We're in training, remember?"
"Okay," Kyle responded, "but at four times regular strength, you'd
better be fast on your feet."
Kyle was right about that, Kitsilan thought as she weaved and dodged to
bring down Eldritch's crew once again. She found Decoy useful in
distracting the mobs in the Foothills, which gave her and Kyle
much-needed breathing room. Before they'd cleared the top half, she and
Kyle both levelled, and Kits portalled back to town.
Kitslian read up on Valkyries, care and feeding thereof, boosted her own
vitality, and readied her energies to call on the heavens. A blinding
light resolved itself into a glowing spearmaiden. "Hi!" she said
brightly, "I'm Valkyrie, your Personal Heavenly Companion!"
Kyle shielded her eyes. "You could have studied Advanced Dodging, or
even added to Guided Arrow. But no, you wanted a glowing stick chick to
follow us around."
"Hush, rogue," Kitsilan said, "and find us some sunglasses. Yo, Valk!"
"Yes, my liege?"
"We're off to fight monsters. They're pretty mean, so your job is to
take the hits for us. Got that?"
"As you wish, my mistress! I am your humble servant in this as in all
things! I glow to do you honour! And to help you find me should I get
lost!"
"Liege?" Kyle looked at Kitsilan. "Mistress?"
"It's an attitude you could learn to cultivate."
"Indeed? Shall I cultivate beaming like Izzy on a toot?"
"Um, that you can leave alone. Please."
They headed back out. Their new companion wandered aimlessly about, but
with a bit of effort, Kitsilan worked out ways of directing her
attention to the actual monsters and away from such compelling
distractions as carrion bunnies and dead trees. Kyle pointedly ignored
the Valkyrie, levelling again to 35 in short order.
The carted the loot back to Larzuk, who paid Kitsilan for it
distractedly. As she turned away, he pulled her aside. "Who's your new
friend?" he whispered.
"Huh? You know Kyle," Kits answered.
"No, not her, the other one."
Kits looked around. Kyle was leaning on a fence, watching a local cook a
rabbit. Nearby, her Personal Heavenly Companion was attempting to skewer
a ferocious leaf and failing. "You mean the Valk? She's not a friend,
she's a minion."
Larzuk drew back, glaring. "I never thought I'd see the day you put on
airs, Kitsilan."
"No, honest-- it's an Amazon skill or spell or whatever. I just learned
it today. Ask Malah."
"She's beautiful. Maybe I could learn that spell, if I studied?"
"Larzuk, old buddy, I'm beginning to see why the Amazons and the
Barbarians split up so long ago. And why Barbarians don't have minion
skills."
"Well, maybe you're right." He had the grace to look sheepish. "Anyway,
I need to finish these claws for Anya. Think she'll like them?" He held
up a pair of silverly claws, each point a razor.
"She'll love them. I just know it. Why can't I get bows this deadly?"
"Kitsilan," the smith replied patiently, "bows don't have points. You
know that."
Kitsilan retrieved the Valk from a cornerpost and with Kyle, waypointed
back to the Frigid Highlands. Imps and Crush Beasts soon took her mind
off the smith, and she kept an eagle eye out for socketed bows and
armour. No possibles dropped, but she did level to 36 with Kyle on her
heels, and added another level of Dodge to appease the rogue's worries.
Every time the Valk became low on life, Kits recast the spell, and kept
her up front as a shield. In this way, they cleared the Highlands of all
monsters and entered the Arreat Plateau, over the prone forms of Eyeback
the Unleashed and his minions.
Things became a bit more exciting, as Lashers whipped Enslaved into
frenzied blow-up dollies who luckily exploded harmlessly away from Kits.
The drops became slightly more interesting as well, though nothing that
Kitsilan could use, save for an Acrobatic Amulet that purported to add a
skill level to passive and magic. Kits tried it on for a while, but
missed the mana leech of her regular amulet, especially now that she was
using Guided Arrow more often.
About halfway through the Plateau, she and Kyle leveled again. "This
players chanting is something else, huh?" she said, putting Cleglaw's
Tooth in her pack.
"Mmm. Just remember to re-set it before we do anything important,"
cautioned Kyle.
They found themselves at the far end of the Plateau soon after,
Sharptooth Slayer and his Lasher crew in a colourful splotchy mess
beside an Evil Urn. Kitsilan set up Decoy and flipped the lid. Out fell
two healing potions and some spiders. The Decoy exploded, startling the
Valk into wandering back to Kitsilan.
"Ick. Well, guess that should wrap it up for today," Kitsilan said.

Thanks! Praise from you is high praise indeed.
You know, I'd forgotten how damned cool Hippolyta looked in her teenage
goth phase (clvl ~35), what with her black skulled armour and black
bow. It's a shame that the Tarnhelm spoiled the general effect, but no
decent circlets were to be had at that stage.
"Are you really going out like that? You make me worry sometimes. You
know, the Night Lords really go for that kind of get-up. And some of
the succubi are a bit keen on-"
"Shut up, Cain, and tell me what kind of armour this is."
Hippolyta's grown up now (clvl 63), and these days she wears the Spirit
Shroud and a Static Circlet (1-114 lightning dmg). Terribly
undistinguished, but needs must.
She still remembers her rebel days, and regrets that Red Vex and Black
Jade won't come to her drinks parties any more. Sure, it was a job to
keep them apart from Hadriel, but at least they stopped Cain from
monopolising the conversation.

Were there any circlets at all? Well, she was in A5, so I suppose there
were. (Orchid, please note that another member of the right-thinking
tribe has surfaced.) However, I'm not sure that the bouncing pony-tail
really goes with the goth look. So I think she may have made the best of
the available options.

Hopefully it's been long enough so that your paranoia over words of
praise has gotten more under control, 'cause I can't say enough of
them ;-) Thank you again for another *exceptional* episode in this
Epic tale, you truly are what some of us Spot Reporters hope to be.
SBPP! :-)
You should have seen the tantrums when Morgana found the Peasant's
Crown.
Cain: Come on, Morgana, you could at least try it on for a quick raid
on Pindleskin, just for me.
Morgana: I'm NOT wearing it. It's ugly and it itches. I have a
perfectly good circlet with +2 cold skills. If you need me, I'll be in
Atma's tavern. Don't wait up.
[slam]
C: Blimey, I wonder how much mana it takes to slam a waypoint.
[the next day]
C: Um, these rumours about you and Geglash-
M: Get real.
C: About the Peasant's Crown then. Maybe you could share it with
Wulfstan.
M: [folds arms] He has my topaz'd Tarnhelm aready.
C: So use the 'Ethernet LAN' chant and give it to one of your friends.
M: Yeah, right, if I wanted to totally insult them. Alcippe's already
paranoid about having dumped that shield which Anya defaced for a
Rhyme'd Grim Shield, which I must say does NOT suit her carefully
cultivated Homeric image. And her Rogue has a Tarnhelm already.
C: I heard about that shield business with Anya. I may be old but I can
still read 'Multiverse Today'. Hippolyta then.
M: Sheesh, Cain, Hippolyta owes me *big time* for runes, and her muscle
already has the Undead Crown. You never even think about my
credibility, do you? I give up. If you need me, I'll be in the Desert
Rain.
C: Tell Atma I said -
[slam]

I suppose there is some distinction in looking just like a clvl 1 yet
kicking arse. The thing is, red just isn't Hippolyta's colour, nor is

Hippolyta doesn't so much mind his showing up, after all he is a
friend. It's just that he /will/ drone on about Horadric cubes all the
time, and the fact is that most everyone knows more about them than he
does. Actually, I think Akara has a bit of a thing for him - maybe
Hippolyta should get them together.

well, but you're sweet. :) The total word count for days 1-26 is over
45K.

(I assume you mean Hell as in A4, since Kits is still in Normal
difficulty) She survived with rather less than that up to now. Rune
Thirst, her Charsi imbued short battle bow:
Two-Hand Damage: 9 - 20
Fast Attack Speed
+1 to Light Radius
5% life stolen per hit
enhanced damage
fire resist 5%
+67 to attack rating
The Snowy bow she got off Larzuk just the day before. I have a fond and
very faint, but persistent, hope that she will soon kick over a corpse
and find Skystrike beneath it.
I took pics of her damage stats with Rune Thirst and then with the new
socketed bow and they're on the website. There's a noticable jump at the
high end between the two, but the really nice part is that she's now
doing a variety of elemental damage.

Pericat and dieBestie found a Peasant's Crown when they were roaming the
Dark Woods. Her reaction to his offer of "why don't you try it?" was
much the same as Morgana's.

Well, then, it's back to pumping iron for the wherewithal to don Ancient
Armour. (sigh) It's hard work, being beautiful.

Well, Akara was the one who was so keen to get Cain to camp. That line
about needing his wisdom is patent dissemblage. And when your char goes
through fire and Griswold to bring him back, she gives a ring. A crap
ring, to be sure, but still highly symbolic.
I suppose the party trick of everyone dropping their Cubes at once, just
to tweak Cain's obsession, gets old after a while.
LOL, I got D2 and LoD together, so I wasn't there for those days.
Pity, really. <g>

And? My computer is showing the folder that contains my web page as
292 KB, and I'm afraid that most of that is the wordy, meandering
stuff ;-)

Yeah, that *was* what I meant, I missed it in the proof-read before I
hit "send", but of *course* caught it when I re-read it after I posted
;-)

And again, Eeep! That sounds suspiciously like the bow that Sis-AR
went through the Crypt in Normal with (6-25, IIRC, without the life
leech), and that was tough! I had to check SisEight, but she isn't
doing much better 5-25 with 4% life leech ;-( But at least she's only
in Act 2/Normal, hopefully something better will come along ;-)

Yeah, that would help ;-)

Which, as I said, should do her very nicely until something better
comes along, and may even serve her as a backup bow well into Hell.
Well done with the socket quest, I have a tendency to forget to use
them, especially in Normal ;-)

Thanks! But I'd never have written them without Kitsilan's example to
spark my imagination. Once I thought about the sorceress, it was
immediately clear to me that she is in fact a spoilt little Valley
Girl.

which is great fun when juxtaposed against the likes of Amplisa.

Hehe! Okay, you win. You're more wordy and meandering than I. :)

Kits does a whole lot of ducking and weaving.

Feel free to light a candle for her.

It did work out pretty well for her. Being nerfed, untwinked and
incommunicado, she can't afford to treat quest rewards of this nature
lightly.
I shall have to take her out again soon and crank up the volume on her
levelling. She'll need to stoke her vitality if she's to get past the
Ancients.

I will if you'll light one for SisEight. That bow *she's* using is
getting old *very* quickly ;-)

Other than the nerfed part, I understand completely, all of my SP
players except the original Sis (RIP) have been played pure.

With the Valk and a Decoy along, in Normal, this shouldn't be *too*
difficult for her. It'd be a lot easier if she could use Guided Arrow,
but still, ... ;-)
