In the middle of a print job, my parallel printer (an old Epson LX80)
stops, beeps, and refuses to do anything more until I turn it off, count to
10, and turn it back on.

Meanwhile, I'm getting an error message on the console: "lp1 on fire". This
message is repeated every few seconds until I reset the printer.

There's no mention of this in the HOWTO.

What's going on?

I'm running 0.99pl12 (SLS distribution), polling driver (I think).

That means that your printer has a problem that it is refusing
to print, but then it is both online and not out of paper. And the
linux kernel lp code interprets that as the printer is on fire :).
Check your printer to find out what the actual error is.

For my laser printer, it means that it is out of toner. So its pretty dependent
on the type and brand of printer.

Many dot matrix printers overheat once in a while. My Epson LQ-510 usually
overheats after about 20 pages, and stops for a while, and Linux tells me
"lp0 on fire". :-)

Try waiting a minute and seeing if your printer starts again after the head
cools off.

Heh-heh.

A lengthy discussion of this rather cryptic message appeared
several months ago in alt.folklore.computers. It seems that
the message itself has been part of unix for quite some time.

But you probably didn't need to know that.

Many flavors of unix spit out this message to indicate that the
os detected a problem with the printer, but has no idea how to
deal with it, other than to inform someone.

I guess this error message would be used as a catch-all for all
errors that the driver wasn't specifically written to handle.

If you read the code, you will see that the lp drivers try to test for
different combinations of status pins on the printer port. If a combination
is present that it doesn't recognise we get the "lp on fire" message.

The aim (I would guess) was to allow more useful messages such as
"out of paper" "offline" etc, but unfortunately PC hardware and printers
never seem to agree 100% on what status lines to light in what conditions.
I used to get this error message even when the printer was working! Oh well...
